There was one in my room when I got there but it was taken to another mom so it wasn't available when DS arrived. But he came out in 10 minutes with just a few pushes so i didn't need it but it would have been cool to see since DH was blocking the video camera. I will definitely have one for baby #2!

Nope, I pushed for 3 hours, and declined the mirror after the nurse (rude one at that) kept asking . I finally snapped "if you want me to faint sure put it to me, but I do not want to see a baby try to pop out of me I want to stay focused" she let it go ;)

Nope! They brought one out for my first but I didn't find it helpful (I was in a squat position and focusing with my eyes closed). This second time around there wasn't time...she came in a whirlwind after about a minute of pushing! I say ask them to offer it this time and if you don't find if helpful then no biggie! But it sounds like some really liked that option.

I did not, but I guess I would be open to it next time. I don't remember it being offered but I didn't push for that long, and no epi so I could feel everything. But now in hindsight it would have been cool to see.

@skibobrown: I totally thought they were lying when tey said they could see her. Then the nurse was like, do you want to feel the head and I thought I'd be having to dig around or something but nope, her little head was right there.

I had been pushing for close to an hour and a half when they offered. I'm so glad I did, it really helped me see what kind of pushes were effective. I didn't stare at it or anything, just glanced every now and then, mostly when they first brought it out and then when he was crowning (I didn't believe D when he said there was lots of dark hair...)

I didn't use one (since E decided to arrive pretty quickly that the midwife almost didn't catch her) but I would've used one if I had been pushing awhile. I think I'll put it in my birth plan to offer a mirror when we have another lo (if that lo chooses not to be as fast as E)

4 hours of pushing with #1 turned into 2 pushes with number two and then she kind of exploded out within about 10 mins of arriving at the hospital...there was no time for a mirror...or anything else, LOL!

I did for both LOs and LOVED it! I wasn't planning to use it with DD1 as I thought I'd be scarred for life, but I wasn't pushing all that effectively due to a brilliantly working epidural. Once I got the mirror,I became a great pusher as I could actually see what I was doing. Watching DD1 come into this world was the most amazing experience of my life. I got to see her crown and then pop out - there are no words to describe it.

With DD2, I said from the start I wanted to use a mirror again, but I was at a different hospital and they didn't have a big one on a frame, so DH was given a compact sized mirror and had to stand feet end and hold the mirror at an angle I could see. Not quite as magical as with DD1, but still pretty amazing to see my baby emerge into this world.

They pulled it out for me, but I didn't find it that helpful. I wanted to close my eyes and focus. I think it may have helped at the very end to be extra motivated for the last few pushes but by that point the doctors were already down there.

If you're making plans, it's nice to have the option but very hard to predict how you'll feel in the actual moment.

I totally planned to. When it came time to push, after 36 hours of labor, I got this hugely primal burst of energy. I felt like a beautiful and strong animal totally in tune with nature - and I was totally laughing about it, at the time. But when they brought the mirror in, I was like noooooo no no no, take that out. Don't spoil the illusion here! I am a goddess! I am so beautiful! So they just laughed and wheeled it right back out.

But I wish I'd been able to see, in retrospect. A picture, at least.

With DD1 I did because I was pushing for an hour and 45 minutes with no luck, 10 minutes with the mirror and she was out. DD2 practically fell out so I didn't need one for her but would have again, I thought I would've been grossed out but it was very cool.
