We also would pile in friends cars in HS and no one wore seatbelts. Like others, we had a van during my preteen years and we would not always be wearing seatbelts during long road trips. We also had a station wagon and I remember riding in the back of it from time to time. Always. My sister went through a phase of refusing to wear her's when she was 11-13 and I thought it was idiotic. Not wearing a seatbelt is not only unsafe for you, it can injure other passengers.</p> <p>Eta: only exception was the school bus (some had seatbelts, but they were not required and no one wore them). We had a full size conversion can, where the back turned into a bed. On long road trips, we would all be piled in the back, watching movies or reading or napping.</p> <p>Those were the days! I remember my teenage sister (this was when I was about 8) would always sleep from our house to Dallas (about a 5-6 hour drive) before waking up--I was like, how can teenagers sleep so much?? From that point on I always strapped in. I'm sure my parents put my seat belt on me too, but that incident sticks out. But we had a van for a few years that we used for family roadtrips, and we often went seatbelt-less while on vacation - especially when not sitting in the front seat.
