Both my parents worked full time, and I remember always going to an after-school program until they picked me up around 6PM. This was until I was about 11. Once I went to middle school, I would ride the bus home and just be home alone until they got home (I think? My memory is a bit fuzzy).

Yes, I used to get jealous of my friend's SAHM who could coem to the school and do lunch and all that stuff. I know she worked hard to provide for our family but I know she regrets not spending as much time with us as she would have liked. I plan to learn from her and put in my hours and leave work at work so I can enjoy my kids growing up.

No, my mom was home all the time. Either she or my dad would drop me off and pick me up from school every single day. They never missed a day. Neither of them ever worked late and we always had dinner together as a family.

My Dad would be away on business for the majority of the year so I missed him a lot when I was younger. Eventually, I didn't mind and looked forward to his trips away! :-)

My mom was a SAHM and sometimes I wish she wasn't because I had really strict parents. Sometimes, I wanted to sneak out and play with my friends when I wanted to since they could because their parents weren't home, but madre said no. We always had sit down dinners as a family and took tons of family vacations. However, having my mom be a SAHM worked out well in case I left my homework at home, she could bring it up to me quickly and I wouldn't get in trouble for turning it in late or get Incompletes. Or when I was feeling ill, she'd be there to be pick me up within 10 minutes.

Sometimes I wished my Mom was a SAHM, mostly when we had field trips. I always wanted her to be a chaperone. But she was always there when we needed her. My Dad commuted quite a ways, so it was harder for him to come to our events. Overall though, I think they did a fantastic job balancing work and kids.

No, I never wished my parents were home more. Both my parents worked full time. My mom worked from 7a to 4p ish. My dad worked 4 to 11p. So I saw my mom during the evenings and my dad was there to take us to school and saw us when we got home. My parents were off on the weekends. My dad was less strict than my mom, so I did wish my dad would stay home instead of going to work. That had nothing to do with their work schedule just with how strict my mom was.

@mrsjazz: I know and the grass is always greener - right? lol! My Mom wasn't home all the time just to watch me, she's always hated leaving the house (still does). So by the time I would get home from school she would be starved for attention and interaction. It was really suffocating! I love her but I think that's one of the main reasons I now live far away..

Ha nope. Mom was home all the time, and dad was home a LOT too. I was that kid that would beg my parents for a babysitter because it was fun to have someone else to play with : )

ETA: I think a big part of my parents ability to function like this was that they had kids later. Mom was 32 when I was born and Dad was 41. They were financially stable enough for my dad to be the only income, and, he was the boss at the point so if he wanted to take off early to come to a ballet recital, no one could say anything about it!

No-- like I said in another thread, my mom was home with us all the way up until the youngest went to college. I feel like my dad missed a lot though-- he often didn't get home until we were in bed. It wasn't that I missed him, since we saw him on the weekends and stuff, but now that we are thinking of having kids soon, I wouldn't want H to miss out on so much.

Not really. There were definitely times when we would be sad or frustrated that mom got called to work for an emergency case but we understood early on that mom worked to save people's lives and she had to go help sick people and their families. Knowing that she was helping me helped us to be less selfish about the times she had to be gone.

My dad was home a good deal because he runs his own business mostly out of a shop in their backyard so even when he was working we could run out and see him. He always came inside at 12:00 for lunch and was always home in the morning and bedtime, even during his busiest times.

I was raised by a single mother and although I know that she had to work to support us, it would have been nice to have her around more. We had a babysitter prior to being school-aged and once we were in school, we were latchkey kids after school and during the summers when we weren't in camp.

I also see the difference between my younger brothers and my sister and I--my mom worked 2 jobs while my brothers were younger and my sister and I took care of them. They had mom around less than we did and not having both their mom and dad around has done a number on them.

My mom was tired a lot. We did have family dinner on the weekends but that really didn't cut it.

No, definitely not. I was NEVER home alone or even with a babysitter for more than 10-20 minutes until I left for college and it was absolutely suffocating. On top of that my Mom would always volunteer for my field trips and dances as a chaperone so it's like I never got any time away from her.

All these threads on how much parents were home growing up are fascinating to me, because I'm sure my work schedule will evolve as Charlie and Olive start school, and I will be home with them after school.

Both my parents have pretty much worked full-time my entire life. My brother and I had a babysitter until I was about 11, and she picked us up from school and hung out with us until my parents came home from work. When we were older, my dad picked us up from school every day, dropped us off at home or whatever classes/lessons we were taking, and then went back to work.

I never felt like I wished my parents were home more, but I wonder if things would have been different if my mom was home after school. We did have hours to ourselves some days, during which time we'd watch cartoons!!! We'd probably do that if my mom were home anyway. :)

Anyway we spent a ton of time together as a family because we had dinner together every evening, and we went on a ridiculous number of family trips, so I never felt like I wanted them to be home more.

Did you wish both your parents, (or one of them) were home more when you were growing up?
