I planned to work until I went into labor. My last day ended up being the Friday before I gave birth on Sunday. I thought baby would be late since it was my first and I had no progress leading up to labor, but she came 5 days before her due date. I planned to continue to work even if she came late so I didn't use up too much maternity leave with no baby.

Lo is due this month so technically things could change at any moment but I scheduled the week before our EDD off which technically is only 4 days before the date. Which only leaves me with 3 weeks left of work!!!

I really want to save as much time as I can for when she is here.

I was due on May 29th. I worked until May 31st. 2 days past my due date. I was nervous about how work would respond when I asked to work past my due date, but I knew in my heart baby wasn't coming until late. Work was very understanding and agreed to me working 2 days past my due date. Technically, they said they couldn't make me take leave earlier, they had to do whatever I wanted. In the end baby didn't come until June 12th. So I still wasted a week and a half waiting for baby to come.

My plan is to work until Sept. 30 (39+3) and then take off until January. We'll see what happens! Thankfully I will be banking comp time so hopefully I can use the comp for the first four days of October and then dip into my vacation/sick time.

I was going to work up until 38.5 weeks, but finished at 37.5 instead, because I just didn't have the energy/patience to be there any longer.
That being said, it would be a MUCH different story if I didn't have a year for maternity leave.

I packed it in 2 weeks before my due date. But I had saved up vacation time for the end of my pregnancy, and then we get one year maternity leave here, so it was time I would have had to take at some point.

@ElbieKay: I had that same fear/worry. In the end though I was starting to get miserable and DH really wanted me to rest. I went 5 days late and I was grateful for the stress free days I had to enjoy the final moments of pregnancy and get ready for baby. I only had 10 weeks of maternity leave total.

I haven't had a LO yet, but I'm about 20 weeks pregnant. It's my greatest hope to go to my due date because it's the day that winter break starts in the school system I work in. Then I wouldn't have to start maternity leave until after that break so I would be getting almost 14 weeks instead of 12!

I originally planned to stop working at 39 weeks, but my OB had me start maternity leave last Friday (37w) because of swelling/pre-e concerns. If not for the swelling I think I could have easily worked until 39 weeks.

@Bluebonnet: I am indeed trying to figure out how to negotiate leave. My due date is on a Sunday. I am going to propose a planned last day of work the prior Friday. I know that is cutting it close, but this is my first baby so it's more likely to be late than early.

My company is pretty flexible about working from home, so I am including the following in my proposal: "If commuting takes too much physical toll towards the end of my pregnancy, I may need the flexibility to work from home rather than stop working in advance of my planned last day of work."

It's just a proposal, so we will see how they respond!

My company sends people on maternity leave before their due date by policy.

If you are looking for negotiating points for maternity leave, its beneficial to your company for you to have a set leave date (versus whenever you go into labor). This forces a transition plan for your work, ensuring you aren't email colleagues from the delivery room or OR about open projects. It also avoids you going into labor at the office. (Of course this all assumes you don't go into labor extremely early).
