We have left our gate up for this reason, she walks by our stairs to get to our room, and she comes to our room almost nightly at a full sprint.

We will be transitioning LO to a bed soonish and this is a concern of mine because she would have to walk by the stairs to get to our room at night. We'll be putting up a gate before we transition because I'm too paranoid.

We still had our gate on the stairs, but we also told LO not to get out of her bed without calling for us. 14 months later, new room and a full size bed and she still won't get out of her bed. She still calls for us every time. Her door is closed (she can open it) and there is nothing keeping her in her bed (no rail) other than the belief that she should call for us.

We have a baby gate that we're moving to the stairs right by his room, I'm not worried about the other set near our bedroom. Either or, I think he'll be fine. He has a nightlight in his room and can easily find his way to us. He's not usually a curious cat to go off on his own even during the daytime.

@looch: oh yeah, nightlights for sure. She hates any dark room right now so maybe this won't even be a problem if it's dark in the hallway and downstairs....

@mediagirl: Hmmm, I dunno then...I was going to say that my son has to pass our room, and he'd wake one of us up, for sure. I am also not a fan of locking the door, but I'd consider a gate in the doorway, as opposed to the top of the stairs. Would that be an option? Or Nightlights, in case she does go exploring?

DS can't open doors yet (and doesn't try thankfully) and for whatever reason, he doesn't even attempt to leave his bed without calling for us either.

That being said, we still have a baby gate up anyway. I've taken a few trips down the (hardwood) steps myself as a kid, and plan to keep that gate up as long as possible.

@looch: nope. Our bedrooms are along the same wall and we both see the stairs when we open our doors. It goes her bedroom, bathroom, our bedroom along the wall. She typically does not go down without us so it's probably an unfounded worry, but it's still a worry.

When we transitioned she couldn't open doors yet so it wasn't a concern since her door is closed. But then she never gets out of her bed when she wakes up.

I wasn't worried about the stairs because we still have a monitor in his room so we know when he is getting out of bed/opening his door and we usually beat him to the stairs but even if we didn't reach him before that point he knows how to safely get down them.

Our LO just hops out of bed herself. I would really worry if we had stairs. When she is up for the day, she just comes in our room and wakes us up.

We've put a gate to block off the hall near the stairs - he's never tried to get over it. He'll either come into our room or if we're downstairs, he'll yell at the gate for us to come get him.

I don't like the idea of keeping our daughter "locked" in her room at night. While we shut her door, I prefer she has the option of coming out if she wants to. That being said, we have stairs and we took down the baby gates. We're going to convert her crib soon and I'm worried about her waking up while we're sleeping and going down the stairs.

Anyone else worry about this? What did you do (other than put up another baby gate which isn't happening...)?
