@NovBaby1112: sounds good to me! lol, I will try anything at this point. Thanks so much for the advice. I was just struggling with okay, if she wakes up at lets say....6 pm, should I keep her up until 7 and then try for another nap? or start her bedtime routine at 6 pm and then get her to sleep at 7? Either way, I guess it doesn't matter because if she stays asleep at 7, awesome, but if not, we can just treat that as a nap!

@ellewoods84: ahh ok, well in that case yea I would def try to have her asleep earlier, esp after only a 30-45 minute nap. I would aim for 45 minutes - 1 hour awake time after that last nap, so you would start your actually bedtime routine (whatever you do- ie. bath, book, milk, etc...) and try to have her ASLEEP within 1 hour from when she wakes up. I would give it a try and see if she falls asleep easier and hopefully stops being up for hours in the MOTN.

@NovBaby1112: we aim to have awake of 1 to 1.5 hours between naps depending on how long it takes her to fall asleep. I always prep her for nap around 1 hour. She naps okay...2-2.5 for her first nap, but then usually 45 minutes the rest of the day. Usually her last nap is 30 min maybe 45. I don't want her to be awake 2 hours but she just won't sleep any earlier. But maybe if I push the routine up earlier she would sleep earlier.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: @jhd: yep, this is us! I tried to make it 730 a while, but she would take a catnap and then wake back up, happy as can be. She sleeps like a champ in the morning, though. Whatever, we will get there :) Mama's tired, but I'm not out to change the world. One thing at a time!

Ha, if by "consistent bed time," you mean she slept at some point every night, then yes. If there was a routine, she was generally asleep by 11. Otherwise, no! :silly:

at 3 months LO went to bed anywhere from 6:30 to 7:30pm, depending on her last nap.

@ellewoods84: At that age my LO would have a cat nap around 5:30 or so for about 30-45 minutes, then I would have her in bed by 7pm usually. She might be awake for long hours in the MOTN bc she is overtired. 2-2.5 hours is a long awake time at that age. How long is her last nap usually?

With DD, yes... it was 6:30 pm every day. With DS, no... it was just 3 hours from his last nap of the day, so it would vary anywhere from 6:30-8.

@anandam: yeah I don't care about a schedule either and it was working for us but now it seems like it's not! It's just annoying because she doesn't have an issue falling asleep at night. It's that she is staying awake after her first night waking for many many hours and then sleeps crappy after that. I thought since we don't have her on any sort of schedule it might help.
@blackbird: 9 pm sounds good-that's what we are pretty much doing. But why is she staying awake soooo long when she wakes up after her first feeding? Don't get it. And because of that she wakes up at a different time every morning.

We're only at 10 weeks but have absolutely no schedule or routine and no immediate plans to enact one! So you're not totally alone! I'm still just following his cues all day and night, but we're not really a scheduley family so it's working for us.

I will say I've noticed we need to shelter him more for eating/sleeping than we used to, so maybe a dark quiet room once you see she's getting sleepy might help her resist it less?

We don't have an exact bedtime but we do have a loose routine and it's about the same time every night. Lo is about 4 months, and for the past month/maybe 6 weeks we've been starting her bedtime routine around 5:30-6:30ish, and she's usually asleep for the night by 6:30-7:30ish. She gets a bath, swaddle, nurse, bottle (we supplement), and then rock to sleep. Sometimes the order gets switched around, and it's nurse bottle nurse. She then sleeps until about 4-6am, and then back to sleep for anywhere from 30mins-2 hrs after that feed. occasionally she has a 1am or so wake up but lately/usually she's out for 9-11 hrs. I think she sleeps so long bc she eats a LOT before bed. Her daytime naps are crap though, she's asleep on me now bc she wouldn't let me put her down and I gave up after awhile ;

Eta we didn't institute this schedule at all-- I really just follow her lead as to when she seems tired, active, or hungry

@ellewoods84: After we got him on a consistent bed time, naps almost sorted themselves out. And it's rough! Basically when he gets home from daycare around 4 until 6:30 we have a very fussy baby, but he passes out when I nurse him to sleep and stays out until 5am! So it's worth it.

@Danizaur: yeah I am not looking for like a consistent sleep schedule, I know it will be all over the place, but more or less would a consistent bedtime help. And no naps after 330?? OMG how did you do it? Granted she only sleeps about 45 min in that late nap, if I kept her awake she would be fusssssssy.

@ellewoods84: T didn't have a consistent sleep schedule AT ALL until almost 5 months. I just now figured it out. So don't feel like you're doing anything wrong! It was just a matter of figuring it out. I did get some great advice to not have any naps after 3:30, but he goes to bed at 6:30 or 7:00. Ever since I started doing that, we've had bedtime success every night around that time!

@ellewoods84: I can't offer advice for your girls night sleep because I have no idea, but I will say that my baby is often awake for more like 2 or 2.5 hours before bedtime even though the rest of his stretches of awake time are shorter. If he is ok I don't worry about the interval overly. And before bed I consider "okay" to be a little looser. Like it's evening and he's getting crankier.

Omg what the hell are we doing wrong! Guide me bees because I am clearly clueless!! Okay so for the past 5 nights she has been going to sleep anywhere from 8-9. This is because she is tired and wants to go to bed at that point. She has been awake for around 2-2.5 hours-which is know is too long for her age, but what can you do when she refuses sleep. So anyways, she then wakes up 2-3 hours after the initial fall asleep. Eats. Will not go back to sleep for 3-4 hours. So like....2 or 3 in the morning. Why. What am I doing wrong?! She isn't crying during this time she's awake until we set her down. My husband and I just alternate holding her, sometimes we lay her on our bed and she just is cooing away, sometimes we put her in the swing, etc. my husband is traveling this week and I am so tired. So my question is....should we still be aiming for a 1 to 1.5 hour wake time after her last nap? So if she wakes up at 6ish put her to sleep at 7-730? I mean sometimes she refuses all early evening sleep so her awake time would be incredibly long if she didn't fall asleep at that 5ish nap. She normally would refuse sleep at that time, but I guess it's worth a shot? Because whatever we are doing is clearly not working.

I think at that age we were still putting DD down for the night pretty late -- like 9 or 10 -- although she was often snoozing in the living room with us earlier than that. Sometime right around 3 months I started instituting an earlier bedtime of 7:30 or 8 PM. It took about a week for her to fully catch on, but once we got her on her new schedule we were quite happy with ourselves.

My LO has been going to bed between 8:30-9 and he's 10wks. Tonight I put him down at 8, because he almost never has a late afternoon nap and therefore is up for at least several hours before bed. We'll see what happens.... He may not be ready for an earlier bedtime and I fear that he'll be up for the day at 6am. I'm not ready for that!! And he's been getting up 1-2 times a night, usually 2 but sometimes we get lucky.

ETA: When we first brought him home, his bedtime was 10-10:30, and has slowly gotten earlier, to the 8:30-9 it is now, and I'm trying to get him used to 8pm.

Usually between 8:30 to 9:30. I expect it'll get more set at 8:30ish whenever I go back to work next week.

His bedtime was 9-9:30 around that time. He's slowlyyy moved it up to about 8:30 now at 8.5 months. He typically sleeps until 8am.
