totally different :/
at least when I was pregnant I could take a nap on the weekends and catch up on sleep. now with a very mobile 8 month old, it's impossible. as soon as he's asleep I'm trying to catch up on cleaning/etc.

haha reading these answers makes me feel sad, I was hoping the same thing! I have started waking up at 4:30 for the day, and I have a horrible time going back to sleep, I guess I still will force myself to lay there until I doze off!

I didn't experience any insomnia during my pregnancy but I will echo pp and say that nothing prepares you for the sleep deprivation once your LO arrives!!

I would say the first couple of months are all about survival! The hormone rush definitely helps!!

Not at all. It just made the tiredness build up. I was even more exhausted than ever in my life during the 1st few weeks that the baby arrived.
@Shimmer: My only advice is to really try to sleep when the babies sleep. Its usually hard to do this because there are so many other things waiting to be done while they sleep, but if you sleep everytime they sleep you wont feel so bad.

Aww man! I was hoping that it would help even a little bit! :P

That being said, at least one of the times I get up at night, I'm up for an hour or more. I'll take that as a mini training session, but definitely not enough to prepare!

Do you ladies have any suggestions to make that first month (or months) a little more tolerable? I have two newborns coming that I'm hoping to breastfeed - does that mean less than half the sleep? (Just kidding - sort of.)

Oh no! Really not liking the answers to this thread!
I always used to sleep 8-12 hrs, straight through the night, not even getting up to pee!
Now i'm up every hour. I thought this was my body prepping me for baby!

I think that being up all the darn time during pregnancy just made me even more tired and overwhelmed after baby came. I'd have definitely preferred to be sleeping like a log during pregnancy and go into parenthood well-rested!

They are not comparable. At 4 am when your baby is screaming, it completely fries your nerves, so that you won't go back to sleep at all. Very different from a trip to the bathroom and then back to bed.

I was up every hour at least in my third tri so
I thought I was totally prepped for when DD came. Well I was wrong, having a newborn is a completely different level of sleep deprivation for me.

I never got late pregnancy insomnia and was really worried that it would impact my ability to be up in the middle of the night. When LO came, I had zero issues getting up with her. Even now I can get up at 1 or 2 - even 3am no problem. It's when she wakes up around 5 am that is toughest for me but even then it's not that bad. I've been able to get enough sleep but it took a good week or so to figure out what would work for me. I'm not a good napper, so I started going to bed early (like around 8:30) and DH will stay up with LO for her late evening feeding (around 10 or 11) and then I'll get up during the night and go back to bed with her after her 5 or 6 am feeding. On the weekends he'll either stay up later or take the early morning feeding so I can sleep in and that helps me catch up too. We are both fairly well rested, especially considering we have a 5 week old infant!

I was hoping it would help, but sadly... no. It's just different, but as others have said, once you get into the time when baby is sleeping longer stretches, it's much, much more tolerable.

But the sleep deprivation! Honestly, the first month was probably the hardest of my life. And yet, my daughter is only 10 weeks old and my memories of that time are already hazy. I remember that it was super challenging, but I don't remember the specifics.

Ha! It's true. Before pregnancy I always slept straight through the night, and then had to 'learn' how to fall back asleep in the middle of the night from being pregnant and having to pee so many times. Those night wakings probably helped with the shock of waking up all night long with the baby. But I'd say that with the baby, I had to learn how to NOT fall asleep while breastfeeding, as that first month is way harder than pregnancy insomnia.....waking up every 2 hours all night long is fine until about 4am.

it helped a little. at first like reberadaisy, i was running on pure adrenline. amazing that our bodies can give birth and hours later were up taking care of our lo's all through the night. that lasted probably about almost 2 weeks until i really started to feel the effects on my body/sleep. nowgetting up is ok, takes about an hour to get back to bedduring a feeding, unlike during pregancy it wasnt that hard to g oback to sleep after a 2 minute pee break :)

I am up now nursing LO. I woke up a lot at the end of pregnancy to pee but was usually able to get back to sleep fairly quickly. The biggest difference when LO came was the length of time i was awake in the middle of the night. It would often take more than 30 mins to nurse and then a much longer time to get her to sleep. So maycbe it helps a little?

I will say that nothing can really prepare you for being up 5 straight hours in the middle of the night because sherefused to sleep (3 weeks old) or how amazing it was the first time she slept 7 hours (7 weeks). Somehow you get through it little by little though...good luck!

I voted somewhat.
I thought the same too that hey it wouldn't be so bad whe she's here because I'm already up all night anyways!
But it's a different kind of exhaustion when she first gets here.
The first couple weeks I was running on pure adrenaline!!! I knew my body was tired but mentally I wasn't. Once that crash happened it was rough!

But I also had a baby that cried all the time and took 2hrs+ to rock to sleep and barely napped.

It's 4:30 am here and I'm up for the 3rd time tonight. I feel like I'm almost used to being up so often at night and when I do sleep more than 2-3 hours at a time, it throws me off!

Can I be hopeful that all this insomnia will help me by when it comes to night feedings and sleeplessness when the babies come?
