@Mrs. Pickle: Oh, I was wondering when straws should be introduced. Thanks! I'll see how they like the straw cups overs the sippy cups.

@bluestriped bee: we give water in a straw cup at meals and R loves it! We didn't do a sippy since she refused bottles, but she took to the straw right away.

@Mrs. Pickle: Thanks. Good to know.

@T.H.O.U.: Yeah, at the babies' 9 month check up, the dr suggested giving them a little water in a sippy cup.

Yea I think by 9 months when they start really ingesting solids they may back off on the milk.

I would for sure go ahead and offer the sippy cup at meal time with water to help start the bottle transition.

DD has increased her solids intake to 3 meals a day and is nursing less. I'm pumping less through the day now. Once she started showing an interest in my breakfast I added that in and recently did the same with lunch. She loves food. I'm not a fan of the saying "food before one is just for fun." I do think babies get the majority of their nutrition from breastmilk or formula before they turn one. But I also think they need solids and need to learn how to eat and what food tastes like. I think it's normal for them to start eating more and drinking less.

My second weaned onto solid food exclusively by ten months. It wasn't my idea but she refused formula and my supply was plummeting due to pregnancy.
Actually both of my bigger girls took more calories than BM before one.
I think the whole food before one is just for fun is a silly rhyme. If your child isn't figuring out how to eat by one milk will sustain them, but I don't think holding back food in order to promote milk intake is realistic or healthy.

It didn't happen until we went up to 3 meals a day of solids, but she gradually started drinking less.

I think that's pretty normal as babies get older and eat more solids. It's true that the only nutrition they need before 1 is from formula or breastmilk, but it's natural that as their solids intake increases, their milk intake lessens. I can't exactly remember with DS1, but DS2 cut out some nursing sessions around 9/10 months.

I keep hearing the phrase, food before one is just for fun, so that would make me assume that they should continue taking their bottle and have no drop in volume. Or is that phrase just for people who practiced BLW and not people who did purees?

That is not the case for my babies. At 9 months old, we are seeing the drop from about 7 oz to now 5 oz at each feeding. I think they look forward to their solids. They are eating their purees really well. They love almost everything we give them. I am venturing out to more chunky foods now that they are sitting unassisted.

Does this mean I can start weaning them from the bottle? Dr did suggest waiting until they are a year to give them cow's milk. I guess I'm surprised that they are sorta moving on from the bottle at 9 months.

Oh, we did start purees around 6-7 months of age.
