My son is only 9 months but has always been picky and we're not able to get him to eat as much solid food as the doctor would like--but at least he nurses enough to stay healthy.

I hear it's pretty common to go through picky periods. @BabyBoecksMom: I agree with this.
A kid won't starve himself.
My doctor actually gave me a handout at the 9 month visit that he would start throwing food on the ground... let me see if I can find it and see what they recommended.

My LO is the opposite. He's been pretty picky since we started solids so I'm hoping he'll grow out of it and become a great eater in his toddler years!!

It used to really frustrate me when he'd spit food out and throw it on the floor. Now I just approach his meals with the perspective of offering a wide variety and just being happy with the fact that he's even putting it in his mouth (even though he spits it out). I focus on nutritious foods that are really filling because he's not a fan of meats and fish (yet!).

@BabyBoecksMom: oh really? my pedi told me to never worry about solids intake before he was a year old because food was about exploration until a year when they do need the calories...

On top of it - he's nursing significantly less as well.

My son just started this at 10.5 months. Went from eating practically everything, to only eating chicken, broccoli and cheddar bunnies. He makes these awful faces and shakes his head when I try to feed him anything,. He spits out half of the food that he attempts to try. I figure its a phase and I can distinctly remember being a few years old and refusing to eat anything but peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. So it's only the beginning.

My lo is like that. She hardly ever eats a good dinner. We just try to pack as much as we can into the meals she does eat. Usually this ends in much more snacking then I would like but it works.

@Mrs. Pen: DD has always been a good eater but about a year old, she seemed like she was getting picky because she was throwing food on the floor and hardly touching anything. I didn't worry too much because they pediatrician told me that after a year old, their growing slows down dramatically, so they don't need as many calories. Plus, kids won't starve themselves, so I know she'll eat when she's hungry. :-)

@Mrs. Pen: I keep thinking back to Mrs Bee's response given to her by a nutritionist. They recommend looking at a child's diet & nutrition in a weekly perspective rather than daily. Does that help? ;)

J is just over 12 months and all of a sudden a REALLY picky eater. Foods that used to be his favorites he now refuses to eat. The only meal that he really eats anymore is breakfast. But most lunch and dinners he makes faces, spits his food out and throws it on the floor.

I know it's probably silly but I do wonder about him not getting enough to eat - he has consistently always been about 6th percentile for his weight. I kind of prided myself on him being a FANTASTIC eater in spite of his weight (I wondered where he put it all!) but now that he's hardly eating anything I do worry... I'm trying to nurse him more but he is becoming disinterested during the day because there are so many other interesting things to do/play/see.

I'm hoping this is a phase and he resumes normal eating habits soon. This has been going on for about two weeks.
