Lol this is my guy exactly. LOVES the cup, might swallow a little water, but mostly dribbles it all over himself. Glad to know it's normal and he will learn.

My son (14 months) does this when he just wants to play with the cup but isn't thirsty anymore. Luckily he likes drinking water so it doesn't happen that often.

Unfortunately he does it every single time with milk, which is so gross and messy. He never took a bottle and now I can't even give him milk in a straw cup!

DS did this with regular sippy cups too. It went on for wayyy too long. I finally started to take the cup away whenever he did it, and that put a stop to it super fast.

So cute! DS does this from time to time but for the most part will swallow the water. It depends on if he has the cup for the whole meal, or if I give it to him when I think he is thirsty. He's had the Zoli for a little over a month now.

Consider yourself lucky for now...
When DD started figuring out how to get the water out of the straw, she SPURTED the water out. Like, she was a fountain for three months. She could spit that stuff three feet away. The first time was hilarious, the next 2,492 times not so much...

@Mae: hahaha. I'm sure the dogs w ould clean the baby if you let them. My dog got so spoiled by everything C dropped he would only go for the good stuff like cheese. Boring vegetables or Cheerios weren't worth the effort to investigate. Lazy lazy dog.

@Mae: yeah she'll definitely figure it out soon enough. But fair warning, C had stopped doing it with water and was doing well, then when I started offering her milk in a straw cup, she started doing the same thing for another week or so. It was like she was all excited for the milk, took too big a sip, then dribbled it all out. Babies. They are messy.

@ellewoods84: yea I'm not concerned at this point, she is not even 6 mo and I don't think she needs much water since she doesn't eat much yet with solids. I'm mostly just so thrilled she LIKES the cup after all our bottle refusal issues. I figure she'll get it eventually.

@twodoghouse: hmmm I wonder if I should warm the water a bit. She will only take warmed formula so that might encourage her to swallow a bit. And yes. The throwing. Lol. She doesn't do it with her cup but when she's fine with a toy it generally sails half way across the room. :)

@Bubbles: yea I'm betting she isn't thirsty. We just started blw so she gets a lot of food in her mouth but doesn't swallow much yet.

Yes, my LO uses a similar straw cup and he did this for a while… I think maybe a month? As he started to drink a bit less formula and actually was thirsty for the water he stopped, but even now at 10mo he will dribble a bit back out if he accidentally takes a bigger mouthful than he means to!

Haha, so cute! I need to try straw cups and see what happens. We've tried sippies of water when they have solids and Blake's ok if it's warmish. But Alice gets some in her mouth and is like whaaaaaa??? Then throws the cup. Then whines and almost falls out of the bumbo reaching for it again. I hand it back, takes a sip, cup on the floor immediately. She's figured out throwing, have I mentioned that? Haha.

Yes, we especially had this problem when we started using just plain straws in restaurants around 10.5 months old... because there was no valve controlling how much liquid he would take in, a lot of the time he would take in too much and dribble it all out. He figured it out pretty quickly though, I'll be that phase won't last long.

Yes. It's awful. It's been MONTHS of it (only using water). She's finally started actually swallowing from Time to time, but I think it's almost like a game for her, to suck it up then spit it out. Blaaah

Well, my LO is a little different in that we didn't start the Zoli straw cup until 12 months, so she knows perfectly well how to suck up fluids and swallow. But sometimes the little rascal will suck up a bunch, open her mouth, and let it dribble out and giggle.

If you think about it, when you drink out of a straw you have to a) stop sucking and then b) swallow. It does take a bit of mastery!

Yes. It was pretty annoying but I think you have a better attitude about it than I did. :)

I can't remember how long it lasted, just gradually got better. I didn't mind it with water but for milk (when you introduce it) I found using a straw cup that was a little harder to suck, like with a no spill valve, helped limit the dribble.

So we started solids a few weeks ago and introduced a zoli straw cup at the same time. She immediately LOVED it. She thought it was the bestest toy ever an liked shaking it around and chewing on the straw and every now and then she'd get a tiny bit of water out.

So a few days ago she totally got the sucking concept. Now she will drain 2 oz of water in about 3 minutes. But she doesn't understand swallowing water lol. She just sucks in a big mouthful of water then spits out out. Then sucks more and spits it out haha. So she drains the water... onto her chest.

I assume this is just a normal phase and I'm thrilled she loves the cup and figured out how to get water out so fast. Just wondering how long babies usually go through the spitting-everything-out phase before they start actually swallowing the water! :)
