I had meconium in my waters both times and LO1 never swolled any, LO2 did and spit up some gunky stuff over her first 36h. Neither breathed any in.

There was meconium in the water and the nurse said she had a mouth full of gunk and she started to turn blue very briefly before they suctioned her, but she was great right after. APGAR was 10!

My waters broke on their own at the beginning of labour, with no meconium present. However, after 4 hours of pushing I had a vacuum-assist due to fetal distress, and they brought in a respiratory specialist. This turned out to be a good thing because sometime in the previous several hours he'd pooped, and due to the stress of the birth inhaled some meconium. He was so pale, except where the meconium was on him. After the call of "mec!" the room exploded with people. His care team intubated and suctioned him. We didn't hear his cry for several minutes, but he went from an APGAR score of 2 to a 9 within 5 mins. I think because they acted so quickly he didn't require a NICU stay. Instead, he stayed in my room with me 'til we left the hospital a couple of days later.

@Mrs.Pinecone316: interesting! My waters were manually broken many hours before I ended up in a c-section (and they saw meconium when they broke them). So I guess there was a NICU nurse in my c-section (no one ever told me this). DD had APGARs of 8 then 9 so I guess they weren't too concerned about her, thankfully!

@regberadaisy: yes, my LO2 had meconium aspiration syndrome. Required a 19 day NICU stay which was very scary in the beginning. I think they told us 10% of babies swallow some meconium and our LO was in the 1% of that 10% that have such a severe case/reaction.

As a nicu nurse our typical protocol is that we are always present for the deliveries when meconium is present in the amniotic fluid. If the baby is born and isn't vigorous (crying or breathing) we will intubate to suction below the vocal cords and remove the tube.If the baby comes out crying then we just do normal newborn care. It isn't very often true meconium aspiration syndrome happens.

@Mrs. Tiger: Yes, the neonatologist emphasized how lucky we were that baby didn't take a breath immediately and that the nurse did an AMAZING job at intubating TWICE and suctioning almost everything out before he did breathe. The doctor spoke very highly of that nurse.

Both of my babies had meconium in the amniotic fluid. Both cried before they were able to be intubated to suction. S did fine, D ended up in NICU for a few days from respiratory distress, but we don't know if it was her VSD or meconium that was primarily to blame.

@Dr. Pepper: wow 2 to 8 is great! My LO's was 2 for the first few hours, I think the last score was a 6 maybe.

My LO did not swallow meconium but aspirated an unknown substance/mucus plug which restricted his air way and caused his brain injury. My DH and I suspect he got it caught in his mouth as they pulled him out (emergency C due to cord prolapse).

Sorry to be the Debbie downer!

Yes, he aspirated meconium and was on a ventilator for several days. The NICU team was already present due to some other health concerns. It took several days to get it all out of his lungs from what I understand.

Yes. LO1 was slathered in meconium head to toe. She looked like swamp thing. The nurse said she was thebpoopiest baby she had ever seen (Im so proud). We were told she was fine and did not inhale meconium so she did not go to the NICU. It wasn't until much later that we were told she swallowed some.

Nope, but she did swallow "birth material" and was yakking it up for sometime. It was actually pretty crappy and made breastfeeding a struggle. I think she felt pretty miserable for a few days.

There was meconium in my water when it broke, but I don't think she swallowed any. She cried immediately when she was born and never spit up anything dark. There was a pediatrician on hand I think, since they knew it was in the water. No nicu stay.

Yes. And then I ended up having to have a c-section so she didn't get all the gunk squeezed out of her lungs like vaginal birth babies do. They were worried about her and had a nicu team standing by when she was born but she was wailing so loud and scored well on her apgar thing so they said she was okay. She spit up a lot of gunk the first two days and didn't eat much. But no nicu stay and ultimately she was just fine.

My son inhaled his meconium. The nurses acted super fast and were able to intubate him and suction twice before he was able to take his first breath. This was so important becuase he wasn't able to get it deaper in his lungs. He never needed oxygen support at all. It did take several minutes of waiting before he took his first breath though. His APGARs ended up being 2 and 8. We did have NICU in the room already for the delivery becuase it was an emergency CSection due to infant distress. So they were prepped and ready to go. He was in the NICU for 4 days.
