It was really important for DH to be at our first FS appointment. 1/2 the appointment was about him, his history, instructions for his testing (bloodwork and semenalysis).

Once I was pregnant, he only came to the important appointments (the early ones, and major ultrasounds).

@kentuckygirl: My husband generally goes with me to my appointments. It's not necessary but it makes me feel better for him to be there.

@kentuckygirl: My husband was there for all of those visits too. We didn't have a curtain. He sat just a little off to the side.

My husband is the one with the appointments and I always go with him. He always wants me to go with him to ask any questions I have. With two people asking questions and listening to the doctor I feel like we are less likely to miss any information.

My first appointment with the nurse he did not (medical questionnaire) but the firs tone with the doctor he did. It was important for him to be there (to me) to hear the heartbeat and what not, and then we ended up needing an ultrasound, I would have been even more of a ball of nerves if he wasn't there to support me!

@MamaMoose: thanks! I guess I need to get used to the idea of hubby being around while doctors examine my private parts. I've always been uncomfortable at GYN exams & the thought of DH watching made it all worse. If there's a curtain maybe that would help! I appreciate your feedback!

@kentuckygirl: I haven't been to an RE but hubs has come to all of my OB appointments with me and I have had internal exams and internal ultrasounds. There is always a curtain up but I have never felt even the slightest bit uncomfortable.

I think if I were you I would want my husband there. Similar to what @ModernDaisy said at my OB appointments hubs will often ask follow up questions that I wouldn't have asked so it's nice for him to be able to get all the information he wants first hand.

@kentuckygirl: I started a thread about this topic and gave a synopsis of my appointment at the end of it, so definitely check it out! A lot of Bee's gave great feedback and my appointment ended up being pretty much the same as everyone else's.

In breif though, I filled out some paperwork in the waiting room, met with the Dr. in his office (fully dressed) to talk about my history and the treatment plan I will most likely take, then I had some blood work taken before I left. It would have been totally fine for him to attend, he might have waited alone for 5 minutes during my blood work but otherwise he would have had the chance to ask questions, etc.

I will say though, that ultimately it's not important that your SO come to the first appointment, especially if it would be inconvenient for him. It's preliminary for the most part, so you will for sure have follow up appointments that are a lot more informational and specific to your treatment plan. I just should have known that my DH would get frustrated not hearing the info first hand and insisted that he come. I'm also a little too practical for my own good and assume it's better not to inconvenience both of us with a work-hour dr. appointment when only one of us has to be there.

My husband made it to 90% of all appointments. Our philosophy was that we were in this together. He did come to the first meeting which didn't have any ultrasounds. We didn't get much from our meeting but that could be because we already had an idea of what to expect.

@Modern Daisy: Thank you, that is good feedback. Did your appointment include any exams or ultrasounds. I think it might be weird to have DH in the room if they do an internal exam or ultrasound...

I have my first appointment tomorrow and when I made it, the patient coordinator said that it's really not necessary for hubbies to tag along because (at this practice, obviously not every place is the same) the first appt is really just a preliminary where they do blood work and other tests, so there wasn't really any need for him to be there...I'll report back here tomorrow and update to see if my opinion's changed at all!

No he didn't and I have mixed feelings about it now. At the time it didn't even occur to me to bring him along, but when I got there almost everyone in the waiting room was in pairs. My appointment went just fine, he didn't NEED to be there to discuss the treatment, but afterwards I had some regret about not bringing him.

That night he asked me a million questions and I couldn't answer any of them which irritated him a little. Turns out he doesn't like hearing the information second hand, even if it's exactly how the Dr. said it to me. Because I would repeat something the Dr. said, then he would immediately have 10 questions and I had no idea what the answers were. I don't blame him, especially since it's such a big deal. So he is definitely coming to the next appointment!

I had assumed that DH would need to go with me to the first RE appointment. When I scheduled it yesterday the receptionist didn't say anything about him being there. Should I call back & ask or just have him go with me?

He really isn't "in" to Doctors and is self employed so the time he would spend with me just means he has to work later that night to keep up with his business. He will go with me if it is important but I hate to ask him to go if he is just going to sit in the waiting room.

Did your SO go with you? Was it helpful? What was your first visit like?
