@Mrsdaredevil: I didn't think it was any more painful than a regular cervical check; of course, I also don't think cervical checks hurt... If cervical checks hurt for you, the membrane sweep might, too.

@Mrsdaredevil: My doctor told me I'd do well in labor because I didn't flinch & had a "high pain tolerance" lol but it wasn't really any worse to me then when they check you down there for other things

My OB will be doing it next week at my appt I will be 39wks 4 days. She said it works 50% of the time and it's suppose to help induce labor. *shrug* worth a try when I will be that close! :)

Do you have to get the stripped? Or is it just if you want to speed things up?

I had mine stripped at 40 weeks and 2 days. It definitely changed things but I don't feel like it did everything. We had him 4 days later. I was dilated to a 4 and if it didn't work they were going to induce labor by breaking my ater.

Sweeping the membranes is basically the procedure Mrs. Bells explained. It separates the bag of waters from the cervix and releases some hormones that promote labor. Typically, it's most successful if done multiple times, or if the woman already has pre-labor signs (starting to dilate/efface, contractions, etc...).

With DD, I had it done at 37 and 38 weeks; I had DD at 39 weeks. I had a different doctor with DS, so I didn't have my membranes stripped at all; I had him at 39 weeks, too.

@Nskillet: I had a partial sweep (no clue how that is different but that's what my doctor said) @ 38 weeks because I was already dilated to a 3 & effaced. I had a full sweep @ 39 weeks when I was dilated to a 5. I went to the hospital @ 39 weeks & 5 days

I have no idea if he stripped my membranes. I'm guessing no, since I went into labor 2 days past my due date.

She did it twice. Like @Mrsbells: said, it's supposed to help you go into labor faster. But it didn't work for me.

From what I've been told they put their finger inside your cervix and sweep their finger in and out. This can sometimes speed of up the process I guess.. I havent had this done so I dont know for sure

36 weeks plus 4 here! Tomorrow if my first internal (yay!) *enter sarcasm*. What does "stripping membranes" mean and when/why would your doctor do this?
