like some other PPs, I've never been weighed by my OB! And when I said to her at a past appt, oh I feel like a bit of a whale, she said - when I look at you, all I see is healthy breastmilk lol

I didn't even get weighed at my appointments! I was weighed at my initial midwife appt at 12 weeks so they could get a BMI measurement on file and that was it. Of course I weighed myself at home so I knew what I was gaining, but my midwives said the number on the scale doesn't matter that much. They can tell visually if weight gain is becoming a concern and other than that, having a pregnant woman step on the scale every appointment does nothing but cause anxiety about gaining too much or too little.

I got lectured a lot starting around the last month or two of my pregnancy, but for the opposite reason. I lost 15 lbs in the first trimester, didn't come back up to my pre-pregnancy weight until well into the second, and overall only put on a gross weight of 4 lbs*. It started with gentle suggestions that I eat more, then graduated to telling me it wasn't healthy for me to diet while I was pregnant because it would hurt the baby. I felt like such a failure of a mother before I even had him...and the kicker was that by that time I would eat things like an entire box of Kraft mac and cheese--the kind with the unnaturally orange powder and no nutritional value--just to try to gain weight. Almost everything made me sick, and even when I was able to eat something it didn't seem to matter.

But E was born super healthy, creeping up on 9lbs, and at my first pp visit my midwife, who was a big shocked by how big he was, told me we were a text book example of a baby taking exactly what he needed from his mother.

*I always cringe talking about this, because I know a ton of women would have loved this, but since he was born I've put on 15 lbs. Breastfeeding did not make me lose weight at all.

I gained 26 lbs with my first and my dr. always said i was on track.

With this pregnancy, i have gained 21.5 at 31 weeks so i am going to end up gaining more than i did last time. my doctor mentioned this, but she said since i "look fine" she's not worried about it.

My Dr. didn't mention weight at all and didn't even look at my chart to see how much I had gained for each appointment. But people in my life constantly asked about weight gain, so much so that I felt like I should get more info in it (since I didn't even know how much I had gained!) So I finally asked him and he just looked at me and said "No, you look absolutely fine so I am not concerned". It turns out I gained about 29 lbs total, which is in the normal range, but of course everyone who asked me about my weight gain only put on like 20 lbs themselves and makes sure I know about it!

I gained almost 50 pounds with E and the only time my doctor commented was when I gained 10 pounds in a month. He wasn't angry either- just wanted to make sure I was aware. This time he says that it looks good every time but I'm 31 weeks and have only gained just under 13 pounds.

No, my last ob was super easy going. This new one is fine, but tells me to gain more weight since I am losing weight... I tell him morning sickness is still going... he says that it should be over by now... then why am I still puking every day?

I am definitely going back to my old OB when appointments become more frequent, I just wish his office hours weren't on my only work day, so I didn't have to see his coworkers!

No way. Every woman's body is different, and we all handle pregnancy and postpartum weight differently. I would hope that unless there was a real risk, most doctors would understand what a sensitive time it is for women, and not make comments regarding weight gain.

I'd gained a good 10lbs by 9 weeks, but half of that had to be vacation weight (we were on our last day of vaca when I found out and MAN was I eating!). So my first few appointments he said that I was "eating well and that's great," or that DH was "sure doing a great job cooking" but now my last appointment I'd held steady so he gave me a prescription for some Buffalo Wild Wings. I'll take it! :-)

God no. I had a midwife. I weighed myself and self-reported. She told me she typically worries more about women who don't gain enough than those who gain a little "too much." I gained 45 lbs and it was a total non-issue.

I was overweight before my pregnancy, and never actually gained anything so that may be why.

I'm super nervous about it. The nurse told me that my doctor is pretty laid back about weight gain, but I am not! I hate seeing the scale go up, and I'm already upset at myself for gaining 7 pounds in the first tri. I know rationally that my body will gain what it needs, but it's so hard to see!

Once I had a regular appt on a Monday and I had gained 1.5lbs in the previous two weeks They had me come back that Wednesday for a different test and the same dr looked at my chart and started lecturing me (not in a kind way) for gaining a pound and a half in two days! I corrected her and said that was my weight gain from the last two weeks. She just said "oh" and didn't apologize. I was really annoyed.

I only gained about 19 pounds, with about 1/3 of that being in the third trimester (and i went to 42 weeks). My OB made a few gentle comments about my lack of weght gain, letting me know it was okay to indulge occasionally, and reminding me to get my protein. I ate just fine, and had dessert every night, I guess I just didn't pack it on, as expected.

Two nurses commented: One at the MFM office when the scale said 163 at 22 weeks, she asked me if that was a little high. The second time was at the midwife's office, and a nurse said, "Honey, don't you think you're going the wrong way?" when the scale showed that I had lost 4 pounds in two weeks. I reminded her that they put me on an 1800 calorie diet.

I see a different OB in the practice at every appointment. One doctor said in the second trimester "I really don't see much weight gain except your bulging belly so I don't think this is an issue." Another said in the third trimester "Hmm, you've actually lost weight!" I gained most of my weight in the second trimester and have been losing a little weight at each appointment in the third. Pregnancy is so different for everyone!

I don't think yelling at a patient is ever appropriate, and I don't think I would stand for it if it happened to me! That said, nobody has ever brought up weight gain or loss with me, not even at my appt this week when we found out I gained 7lbs in 4wks! I gained about 30lbs w/my 1st, and at 26.5wks now I'm up maybe 2-3lbs since BFP.
