Our situation was a little bit different than yours. My oldest dog had separation anxiety for years & would pee on our floors while gone especially after we moved. I have horrible allergies so we took out all the carpet upstairs and left the carpet downstairs. She gets to stay out during the day while our other dog is in the kennel (he was our chewer) and we haven't had an accident sense.

Ours was a bit of a different situation, but I just had to share. We have a greyhound and we occasionally foster greyhounds through our rescue org. 2 years ago, we fostered the sweetest, most adorable guy, Sid... who did the most incredible damage every time we left the house. Not only did he have an pee/poo accident EVERY time we left for the first month, he also tore apart blinds, chewed up drywall, badly scratched up our dining room table (which is one of my very favorite pieces of furniture). See evidence... We had to give him back to the org after 2 months of fostering because it was just too much. The sad thing is that Sid and our dog Gia LOVED each other!

I haven't been able to foster another dog since then, it was just too traumatic!!

@autumnlove: Do you have a male dog? If so, try a belly band for a week or two while he gets used to the new smells. The rescue I volunteer for sells them for around $10: http://caninecastaways.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=24&Itemid=20

The pic on the bottom right is my minpin wearing one and it worked when we moved... He didn't mark at all!

No, actually we had the opposite happen. Our dog wasn't fully house-trained when we moved, but once we moved in..she magically was! It's been almost 5 months and she has only had 1 accident (which was my fault). So everyone is different!

Yep but we expected it (have moved 5 times since we adopted him and know its an issue). We have a bissel spot bot, nature miracle no marking spray, and I made fleece/velour belly bands for the first few days so if he did, it wasn't as bad or exist to clean up - or we could see if he was "trustworthy" yet. After a few days he's fine.

maybe have your pup hang out in a tiled/non-carpeted area for a bit when you first get there, to get the new-house-jitters out

we do that sometimes with my dog when we go somewhere new and want to get her kind of acclimated without her freaking out - that way he can see the environment and settle in a bit before being exposed to all of it, and it will be much easier to clean up

Yep. My chihuahua was completely potty trained before we moved and after we had to resort to crating her when we left the house again.

Nope! When we first got him, he did this at my parents' house and my brother's house the first time he went to each, but that's it and he has never done it since. He's moved a lot, too-- my sister and I shared an apartment (never once peed there, even when we first got him!), then we each moved and he spends time in both our places, then I moved again!

So, be prepared, but it might not be an issue at all. I am not pretending it was any special training I did, however-- we just got lucky!

Yep. It hasn't been too bad though. We got a new Woolite pet stain carpet spray that works really well.

we moved into a "new" house while ours is being repaired, and she didn't mark anything when we got there.

she did mark my in-laws house that we stayed in during the hurricane, even though she had been there many, many times before (and it wasn't an emergency - she had just been out)

good luck! i would say grab some carpet cleaner, just in case

Does your dog normally mark in a new environment? My dog is perfectly house trained and *never* goes inside our house or other people's. But my parents' dog is a big time marker - every time he comes here he marks (although with poop) and he does the same thing when they go between their house in NY and their place in FL.

We've tried to get him not to by taking him outside enough to prevent it, but it seems like if he wants to mark he's eventually going to.

Be ready for it. Every dog will be different. I foster dogs for a rescue. Everytime I take one in, or anytime I adopt one out I tell people to give it about 2 weeks. There is always that "transition" period. Its a big change for the dog. Some dogs handle it better than others but regardless I would be prepared for it none the less.
Best of luck!!!!
