Mine told me it was dangerous because of high mercury in fish oils. So after freaking out a bit because I take fish pills regularly I researched the brand I was taking and there's no detectable mercury. I think the current research suggests good benefits so I decided my OB was a bit out of date/misinformed and kept taking them.

I started taking the DHA on my own when I found out I was pregnant. At my first midwive's appt, I was told the same thing you were told - there's no medical support for the idea that it's particularly helpful, but it's also not harmful. My husband is a doc and he did a little research and said the same thing. So, we agreed I would take it until my supply ran out (maybe another week?) and then wouldn't bother with it anymore. I'll be in my second trimester by then, and so anything that would be impacted by the DHA supplement will or should be formed by then.

My OB prescribed prenatals that have DHA, I tried 3 different types and they all had DHA. She never specifically spoke to me about DHA though.

@tequiero21: my Dr. said it was ok to stop taking them after the first trimester because the most important time was during the first trimester for fetal brain development.

My prenatals don't have DHA, but my doctor said they were good. She's never mentioned anything about adding any other supplements.

The practice I go to for prenatal care has you meet with midwives for the first few appointments and their OBs take over for the rest of your care. Initially my midwide had mentioned Fish oils were an adequate source of DHA during pregnancy. At the time, I was on a DHA supplement but with that info have since switched to fish oils out of convenience (DH takes fish oils so its just easier to have them around).

Getting to the point, at my last appointment I asked my OB what dosage I should be following for the fish oils and I was surprised by her response. Basically, she told me there's no universal recommendation, or even recognition, that DHA is beneficial during pregnancy. She said it isn't considered to be harmful either, but insisted it really doesn't matter if I take them or not.

Has anyone been given/read similar information? It kind of goes against everything I've been lead to believe and I don't really know what to make of it. I'm planning to continue taking them, but now I'm really curious whether this is more or less her personal opinion, or something that's more widely accepted.
