I think my family was pretty into "I love yous" - we always said it getting off the phone, going to bed, that kind of thing. I have definitely carried that on - I say "Love you, girl," to my best friends when we get off the phone because, as others have said, you never know what will happen. My husband and I say, "Love you, {pet name}," probably 5 times a day minimum. Sometimes we say it for no reason... which maybe takes the meaning out of it a bit? Still feels good to hear every time :)

The only person who ever said I love you to us growing up was our grandparents. I had pretty bad parents though...

We always said "I love you" to eachother and I think it was just because time is limited and you never really know. We didn't just say it to say it but it is definitely nice to hear. My DH's family was not the same, however he obviously felt loved and is close to his parents it is just different.

Like other posters with Chinese (or asian) parents, "I Love You', hugs, and kisses was not a common occurence. Hubby's side of the family are all about the ILY and hugs, so it was a huge learning curve, and adjustement.

My family said "I love you" a lot when I was little. We still do - especially when we talk on the phone. The only person who doesn't is my older sister. I will always say "ok, love you" when we get off the phone and she will say "yeah, bye" real quick. It makes me laugh because she's just not a very warm, gushing with love type of person.

We don't have kids but I think my husband and I will say "I love you" a lot to our kids because we tell our dogs how much we love them constantly!

My parents NEVER said "I love you" to me when I was a kid. NEVER EVER. My mom started saying it to us when we were older, like in university. To this day, my dad has never uttered those words. He's too Korean to verbalize any emotion. If he ever did say it to me, I would feel uncomfortable!

All the time! I do it with my friends and husband, too. It was spoken, sung, rhymed, signed, hugged, and kissed into us that we are loved. My mom-in-law and I tell each other "I love you!" every time she's on the phone to my husband. So when we have kids... I won't be able NOT to. I don't know HOW to not shower loved ones with affection.

My parents never told me they loved me when I was growing up. It was probably a cultural thing. My mother used to tell me that people show their love in actions-- therefore I was well-fed, warmly clothed, and was never left for wanting much-- which proved she and my father loved me. Still, I wish I heard it more often growing up. I drop the L-bomb all the time with the baby and also to my parents and other family members. I make it a point to tell them so they know.

Unlike the stereotype of Korean dads, my dad was huge on this when we were growing up. I don't recall my mom verbalizing as much, but her actions spoke volumes every day. Now that we're older, they don't get off the phone without my brother or I saying ILY. They also always leave with a hug, cheek peck, and ILY from DH.

We never said it very much growing up, and still to this day (I'm 27), I feel kind of weird saying it to my parents, haha! We also don't hug! But, like @Mr. Bee said, I never doubt their love for me! I'd like to be a little more physical with my children though so they aren't weirded out by hugs like I am.

Nope. We weren't big huggers/kissers/I love you'ers. As I've gotten older, I've worked on that and now it's not so painful when friends hug me and I'm more huggy with my parents. We still don't say I love you much but I'm ok with that. I always felt the love even if it wasn't said.

No, like typical Chinese people, my parents did not. But I say it constantly to my LO. I joked to my SO the other day that my LO is only 18 months but she has probably already heard the L word from me more times than I have heard from my own mother. So there has definitely been inflation!

My parents are old-school Chinese so there definitely wasn't a lot of "I love you's" being thrown around even though I knew they loved us. When my nieces and nephews were born, I made a conscious effort to break the non-PDA cycle and hugged, kissed, and told them I loved them. Needless to say, my LO gets showered with affection.

My parents didn't really drop the L-bomb on us very often growing up, if at all. But I never doubted their love for me.

It's interesting though because I am dropping L-bombs on my kids like crazy. Here's one of a million examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAUioyKzQzA

I think there's been "I Love You Inflation" over the years haha. The same number of "I Love Yous" doesn't go as far as it used to.

Does your family drop "I love yous" on each other a lot when you were a kid? How about you... do you use the phrase a lot with your kids, or are you more sparing with it?
