I have definitely carried that on - I say "Love you, girl," to my best friends when we get off the phone because, as others have said, you never know what will happen. My husband and I say, "Love you, {pet name}," probably 5 times a day minimum. Sometimes we say it for no reason... which maybe takes the meaning out of it a bit? It was probably a cultural thing. My mother used to tell me that people show their love in actions-- therefore I was well-fed, warmly clothed, and was never left for wanting much-- which proved she and my father loved me.
