He attended my co-ed work baby shower, and showed up at the tail end of my ladies only shower. {He wanted cake, and I wanted him to say thank you and load up the gifts.}

Yes, he came for part of the gift opening and to say hello to everyone at my first shower, which was mostly his family. He planned on doing the same for my second (mostly my family) but had a stomach bug and didn't travel. I like it when the groom/daddy comes!

I had a co-ed baby shower and everyone's SO showed up for the whole thing ... but my shower was mostly friends and a few family members so maybe because we are all in *this* generation everyone was fine with it.

I think it's probably okay if your husband doesn't show up near the end. You can probably just say what you said to us... our pet sitter was not able to sit for us this weekend so my husband stayed home with them, so on behalf of both of us I would like to thank you for coming to this shower and all the presents and love I received today. Thank you.

My DH did not make an appearance. I don't think it's rude at all! As a guest at a ladies only shower I never expect the husband to be there (I actually assume that he won't be).

Glad to hear that most people either didn't have their DHs there or didn't think it was a big deal to have them there!

I've checked with the moms and they said while they think in general he should be there, considering the circumstances they are okay if he can't make it. It isn't a perfect solution and I don't love spending 2 nights away from him, but I think it is probably the best option at this point unless I think of something else.

we lived in Boston and my shower was in Michigan and we decided it wasn't worth a plane ticket for him to come for 10 minutes. DH's dad drove his mom up from Ohio though, and my brother was there, so they did stop by in the last 10 minutes and help load gifts. people definitely understood and no one made a big deal of it.

He helped me open presents at his family's shower and will show up at the end of my family's shower. It's not a big tradition in either of our family's though, so I didn't really care what he did. I think if you're having a family emergency (pets are family in our family!) that it wouldn't be a big deal if he couldn't make it? Hopefully your mom is ok with him staying home too!

My DH was there in the beginning to help set some things up, but was gone before people arrived, and came back at the end to gather gifts... Both times he missed the majority of the guests, which I don't think is a big deal at all. I associate showers with a women's only event.

@locavore_mama: He's fine as long as he's on his meds! :) He had a scary 6 months figuring out the issue and getting the dosage right but he's had 2 full years now totally healthy (knock on wood) since we figured out the right meds cocktail.

Just heard back from our back-up service that they are unavailable! Ugh. I think I'm going to call my mom and feel her out to see how big a deal she thinks it will be if my husband stays home.

Yep. At both of my showers, I don't like being center of attention and I'm glad he was there with me! He also was at my bridal shower. This in large part due to the vast amount of ppl/MIL's guests.

In your situation though, I think it's ok for him to stay home with your dog!

@locavore_mama: Our dog isn't the problem, he could come with us. The issue is that we have 2 cats and one of them is on (important life sustaining) medication every 12 hours. This makes it really hard to just have a friend stop by to feed them because it's not super easy to give him his pills and none of our friends have ever done it before. Also the cats have extreme fear of the car and I literally don't think the sick cat's heart could handle a two hour trip (there, then another 2hr trip back).

And no, I don't care at all if he is there. I mean I'd like to have company for the weekend because I don't love being away from him for 36 hrs and sleeping alone for 2 nights (I think it would be rude to my mom to cut my visit short just bc he couldn't come, she has put a ton of time into this shower and I want to hang out with her as planned). But I'm much more concerned about our families thinking it is rude that he didn't show. I just didn't know what the "norm" was for most people on this topic!
