Ours were covered and I agree with @mrs. jump rope whenever I had a doubt I got the billing code and then provided it to my insurer. Also, if you have the ability to email with your insurer through their website, I would do that because then you have everything in writing. (this has helped me multiple times with billing disputes)

Ours was covered. We had no risk factors either. I'm 24 and we have no family history or anything of genetic disorders. @Mrs. Jump Rope: had a great idea. That's what I would do.

I was told it was optional also, but our insurance covered it with no problems.

Ours was covered.

I'd call your OBs office and ask for the billing code, then call your insurance company back and see if it's covered under that code.

I am not sure if mine was optional or not. The OB didn't really ask if we wanted to do it or not, but we did. I think that this was the one of the only times that we had to pay something, like $50 or so.

I did not even think to ask if it was covered until after, but luckily it was. I didn't have any risk factors, was 32 at the time, and the midwife practice said it wasn't necessary but they seemed to recommend it. It was our first ultrasound since they didn't do a dating one. Insurance covered it with no issue. But like I said, I didn't call and check or anything, which in hindsight, was pretty dumb!

My OB practice just asks if you want to have the NT scan (maybe if you have certain risk factors they're more insistent). They said to check with our insurance to make sure it would be paid for. I called our insurance and got a girl who took forever to even figure out what I was talking about. Then she said it was covered "as long as it's medically necessary. So as long as you're not just wanting it or the doctors doing it to bill more, etc."

That didn't exactly answer my question since it's not something that my OB requires. On the other hand, I don't know how they would know that it was "optional," either. Anyone else have a situation like this with an ultrasound?
