My son was dead on the 50th %ile for height, length and head circ at birth (I was so proud :silly: ) and was back at birth weight within 3 days. Grew furiously for about a month and then slowed right down. Went from the 50th, to the 30th, to the 20th, and now at nearly 8 months is sitting right around the 15th for weight and the 25th for height. He's a little guy. I'm trying not to worry since he is consistently gaining weight but its hard, all the babies in my mothers groups are giants and my little shrimp is still in 3-6months clothes. He already has 6 teeth though, I just say that all his calories are going into teeth for now and that he'll grow once they are all in!

N was 8 pounds 3 ounces 19.5 inches long at birth. At 25 months he is finally 25.5 pounds. I am not sure how tall he is but he is "average" in height. He is skinny tho.

I don't think birth size has much to do with how people end up. I was tiny, and 5 lbs, I'm now 5'10." My kids were both tiny at birth, and now are in the highest percentiles. Don't worry about it- every person grows at his or her own rate, and every person has different genes and factors that contribute to their own size. He's darling and healthy, so don't stress!

my 8 lb 9 oz baby is still a giant (95%ile+ in height), which is a totally mystery because we are both short (guess we just carried the tall genes?)

but don't take the stupid stuff people say to heart . . . my giant baby who has always been in the 90s for height and 70s for weight percentiles didn't walk until 18mo, never learned to properly crawl (only scooted), and was totally caught up and fine by 2 years! every baby just does their own thing.

Yup! My daughter was born 9lb, 3oz and has been small ever since that day! She's 20 months now and at her last check up she was in the 30% for weight. She's just going to be tall and skinny like her dad! People are always shocked when I tell her how big she was at birth! (no GD for me, either)

My LO was 7lbs 6ozs at birth and stays consistently between 50th and 75th for weight. I know it's not easy, but forget what other people think of your baby, you, and your parenting!! Now if only I could do the same.

I'm starting to believe that birth weight and height aren't necessarily very good indicators of what a child's/baby's growth curve or future will end up being. And I don't think they have much to do with milestones.

Mine is more of the opposite. DD was born 18.5" and 7lbs4oz at 41weeks. I know 7lbs is average and about 50%ile, but 18.5" is 10th %. I was born 8lbs2oz- 2 weeks early. DH and I are 6' tall and my dad's family has a lot of height (6'4", 6'8") and DH's brothers are not short either.

So I was surprised she was so short!!

She grew 3" the first month and 2" the next month and is now about 85% for height and stays around 75-80% for weight. Which is how I always was as a child/baby. She seems to be pretty average for milestones.

I wouldn't worry about milestones being related to weight. I know tiny babies (10% weight, etc) that are super advanced (sitting on their own at 4-5 mo) and big babies (90%) that don't have no interest in crawling at 7 mo.

Yup, DD was 8lbs, 4oz (so not huge, but larger), and now at a year is in the 60% for height and only 25% for weight. Luckily no on has said anything really about her size, sounds pretty rude. She hit her physical milestones early though (first steps at 9 months, fully walking by 10), and I actually think her being lighter helped with that.

Yes. He was 8lb 13oz when he was born at 39 weeks and I think GD was a big factor. Around 6 months, he started slowing down big time. Now at 11.5 months, he's pretty small- 20th percentile for weight and 6th for height. My family and I are petite people, so I guess that's coming into play now.

My daughter was 9lbs 3 oz when she was born but then was only 10lbs at 2 months old so she took a while for her growth to take off, but then she jumped back up and is now between 50-75% for height/weight after 4 months (she's 17 months now), so a little bigger than avg but not huge. Her head has always been 97-99+% though haha.

Not me, but my brother was 9lbs 11oz at birth. When he was born, everyone thought would have a bigger stockier build when he grew up.

But as he grew, he became super tall and very lean...people who see his newborn/baby pictures never believe it's him now!

I was also a big baby at birth and very tall for my age...until 12, when I topped out at 5"2'. So I don't think birth weight and height necessarily dictate those things later in life.

As long as he's healthy and the dr isn't concerned (and from what you said, it doesn't sound like anyone should be!) ignore those looks and comments!

My kids have never had the problem of being lean, but Wagon Jr. is very short. Last height check he was at 4th percentile. But we're not tall people so the doctor is not concerned. We got negative comments about our chunky babies so I think you just can't win either way ;) As long as they're not falling off a growth curve I wouldn't be concerned.

DS was also 8lbs 9oz at birth, he has gone in the other direction and become enormously huge - he was off the top of the centile chart at 8 months (but I think he has lost some since becoming mobile). I think it's genetic - DH is 6"4' and big built, but I also dislike the comments of strangers - more than one person has asked me 'what do you feed him?' as a serious question!

Yep. Xander was 8 lbs 14 oz at birth and quickly fell to around the 13th percentile! People are definitely surprised to find out he was such a big baby at birth because he's very lean now! And anyone commenting on your kid's size is annoying I find. People need to just STFU.

No - DS1 was 10lbs 9oz at birth. Now at 2 years old, he is still 98%+ for weight. His height is now average at 50%. He's always been on the bigger size for his age. He's not chubby (well besides a belly) just solid.

His little brother was born average at 7 lbs 2 oz but is now also 98%+ on weight and 50%+ for height based on his 4 month appointment. He was 20 pounds.

My point is I think it's based more on genetics and not just birth weight. My boys take after their dad's body.

Yup p was 8 lbs 6 oz at birth but quickly most weight and at 28 months is 25 pounds. He's a string bean. D also started out big at birth (7, 10) and at 2 months, (almost ten pounds) we get asked if he is a preemie/newborn constantly. We had.weight.gain issues with both boys in the beginning but I also think genetically my kids are just destined to be string beans.

T weighed 8lbs 9oz at birth. Not huge but definitely on the larger side. Now at 8 months he's very lean and small for his age. A lot of people ask if he was a small newborn and are surprised to hear that he wasn't.

It's getting kind of annoying because people tend to relate big chunky babies as healthy and they look at me like there's something wrong with him. Especially since he was late to sit and still not crawling.

Anyone else in this boat?
