Our youngest seems to have this problem with solids. We've had a few puke incidents in the past couple of weeks. He definitely does the gagging thing. He also sticks all of his hand in his mouth to feed himself. He can pick up the food one at a time, but transferring it to his mouth requires more fingers. I'm hoping that he figures it out soon, so we're not always on puke alert in his crib and in general.

ETA: He's 14 months old and has had solids for some time.

It depends on the baby. My daughter was fine, my son was not.

Another tip I read was to add crushed cracker to a puree to get them to get used to texture and moving things around. We found he gagged and vomited most when something dry was stuck to his tongue that he couldn't move.

DS just did this tonight. I tried giving him some cubes steamed sweet potato. He gagged so hard the bottle and puffs he had right before all came up. I felt bad.

I know gagging is normal according to BLW but it was the first time he threw up everything.

I know I have to keep giving cubed foods to him. Twins are almost 11 months and I should have been giving him cubed steam foods because I think they love purees too much. Should I give it to him before his bottle so he doesn't throw up his bottle again?

Yup! I just give him a pep talk and tell him to "swallow" and point to my throat. It distracts him enough that he starts to concentrate on the food and stops gagging.

@Pepper: Yes! Mine gagged and threw up her banana a couple weeks ago. And then did the same with a chunky avocado purée. We have been taking it slow, but it hasn't happened in 10 days or so. I always cringe when she starts to gag! I know it's good, but I hate when she throws up her food + last nursing session's milk because it's like she is skipping a meal!

@scg00387: agreed! As counterintuitive as it is, larger pieces are safer than small pieces for babies just starting solids.

It's completely normal for babies to gag as they're learning how to eat. Scary for mom! But totally normal.

@scg00387: It was a tiny piece. I have given him whole bananas before, but he always bites off pieces that are too big.

@heartonastring: @Foodnerd81: I had heard that gagging was good, it's just the vomiting that really upset me! Poor guy.

We started with BLW at 6 mo but DS would gag and throw up every single time. So we took a break and started with purees. Then we started back up again around 7-8 mo with more BLW type of feeding along with purees. He was better with it then.

What @heartonastring: said!

We are doing BLW and gagging is part of the deal, even though it gives me a heart attack every time. She rarely does it on food now, a month in, but the first several meals she would gag and push the food out (though she never threw up from it). The BLW book talks about the gagging as baby learning to eat and that it's good, and I'm glad I read it or I'd freak out even more.

Now if I could get her to stop gagging and chocking on her water I'd be a happy camper.

Gagging is good! It's your baby's way of learning how to manage food. Their gag reflex is very close to the front of their mouth, which protects them from choking. Gagging(and sometimes vomiting) is a very normal part of starting solids.

@Pepper: what size was it? if it was a small chunk maybe try giving him disks or spears so he can bite pieces off! we had minimal gagging and no choking, but I think that is rare.

YES! This happened to us. This happened more to us when we tried to give LO bigger pieces. We pushed through because it was suppose to be normal and everything turned out fine. It was super scary though.

All. The. Time. At first (around 6ish months), he gagged with pretty much every bite and really seemed to not be enjoying himself. So we waited a few days/a week and tried again. He didn't start eating solids well until 8 or 9 months.

Yea we had a few times of this happening, depending on how we cut up whatever food. Thankfully he just spit it up and was okay and we recovered from our heart attacks. We just kept pushing through it... went back to purees til we could breathe and then went back to chunks... his usual gagging way into solids was usually due to him trying to eat too much at once!

LO is 8 months old. He eats puffs like a champ (cut in half), so I decided to boil some sweet potatoes and cut/mash them up for him to eat at lunch. He usually has purees, and he has been handling the chunky purees really well.

Well, he took a tiny piece of mushy sweet potato in his mouth and gagged... then threw up half of his lunch bottle. Ugh. This happened twice.

Is there something I should be doing differently? Or should I just wait to try again when he's older? I was so surprised because he gums the puffs and swallows them without any issues!
