@Mrs. Jacks: Ditto!

I don't know if parenting ever really gets "easy." The challenges just become different.

Agree w/@ andrea that the challenges change. When LO was a newborn, I was just exhausted and constantly sleep-deprived. At 6.5 months, she's sleeping well and is so much more fun, but now I have to actively entertain/engage her and stress about her food, so it's more challenging in that aspect.

One day when I was really frustrated by my three boys and my daughter was being fussy I asked my dad if it gets easier. He said " nope, it doesn't get easier it just is different.".

I have to admit it didn't help atthe time but I thought a lot about it and it's true. Each stage presents challenges. To be honest I fear the teenage years.

@Mrs. Jacks: Maybe my LO is reversing the trend... easy, difficult then easy again! Wishful thinking maybe?! ;)

Hah everyone has me fearful of the toddler days ahead of us :)

Looking back, I think the newborn stage was much easier
than the toddler stage. I can safely say that because I have a
newborn and a toddler right now and my newbirn is so much easier! These terrible twos are killing me!

Some things are easier and some things are harder. And some things are easier and then get harder again. She likes to keep us guessing :)

I don't think it gets easier or harder with age, it's just different. DD was a great newborn but she needed me for every necessity, which is exhausting. However if all her needs were met she was content and I could do a few things around the house. Now DD can do things on her own, which means she follows me all over, whines if I'm not paying attention to her and gets into EVERYTHING! So I don't get much done these days.

Toddler Girl was very high needs for the first 6 months, then much easier (and slept like a dream) until she was a year. Then she went through a couple rough patches, but non as bad as she had been. Now she's 2.5 and in general is such a good kid and still a great sleeper. I never thought I'd survive the newborn months but she is so much fun now!

Also, 4 months is classic for a brutal sleep regression. Both of my girls were terrible at that age, it's totally normal. (http://www.askmoxie.org/2009/03/a-reminder-about-sleep-regressions.html)

I think the challenges change. As @Mrs. Jacks said, our two year olds can really frustrate the heck outta us in completely different ways compared to a baby.

I think the newborn stage is definitely difficult. DD is 7 months now and crawling/climbing everything and it's exhausting trying to keep up with her! Sleep has gone completely out the window now because she would rather explore than sleep. But she isn't dependent on me to keep her entertained all the time either.

I wish I could bottle her energy - haha

I think there is a curve that's hard in the beginning, gets easier, and then much harder as a toddler. I was never angry or exasperated by my child until she was a toddler!

It has been true for us. As a newborn, DS had horrible colic and sleep was terrible. Things are much easier now at 12 months.

Our little one is 4 months old and has been a handful recently - mostly in the sleep department. I don't think our issues would bother me nearly as much as they do if she hadn't been such an amazing sleeper and generally easy baby up until this point.

I guess I always assumed the newborn stage would be the most difficult and things would slowly become easier with time and age. I was saaadly mistaken!

Has anyone found this to be true?!
