@banana: @VanillaBean: @looch: thanks! I'l let you all know how it goes, but I'm preparing myself for a rough couple of days initially.

@BoogieBea: oh wow, there is that possibility, too. OK, I'll make sure to tread lightly. So far she has seemed excited when we do talk about it.

My son cried for a few days starting the second day. After the first week, he was fine. He is one of those kids where actually talking to him about it at home made him more anxious. We just had to treat it like it was no big deal.

Hope it all goes well.

@banana- You're welcome! I'm glad you feel these tips will be of good use for you. :)

@Andrea- As noted by banana, your lo might just do exactly that, cry for a few days. This is what happens normally during your LO transition to a new school. :) She will be okay and before you know it, she might want to stay longer, not go home when you pick up. hehehe I know every child is different, but I have found that children in daycare do better (transition easier) than those who have not been in a school setting, so I think your lo might be fine. :)

@Andrea: Let me know how it goes! She'll probably cry the first few days and then love it (like most kids). :) It's hard to hear them cry though. :( But I'm sure she will LOVE her new Montessori school.

@banana: I know ... I am starting to worry. I read through all the preschool blog posts and they made me want to cry!

@VanillaBean: wow, these are fantastic tips. I will definitely do some of these things with her. I do hope that it will be harder on me than her! Thanks so much!

@Andrea- I used to be a former childcare administrator and here are some suggestions to help you and your little one. :)

-talk, talk, talk "enthusiastically" (if you have anxiety, your child will sense it, too.)to your LO about her new school, also take her to visit her new school a few times if they allow it. It would be helpful to your LO if she can see her where and what her new environment will be like.

-For the first week or two, depending on your child, send her to school with something from home, a picture of your family including her so that teachers can talk to her about the family pictures, help her connect with both the home and school experience will ease your child's fear/anxiety in the new environment. Also, perhaps a favorite toy to bring to school that will not distract her peers, a quiet toy of some sort that will bring your LO comfort (have her leave in her backpack). Some schools don't allow LO to bring a toy to school, so you can leave it in the car when you get to school.

-ask if the teachers can give you a courtesy call if your LO is not doing too well. At least you have an idea of what to expect when you pick up. Quality child care will do this automatically and even call you, if she is doing great.

-create a social story of your LO at her new setting. If you can take pictures of her new school that would be great. If not, have her draw it, while you provide the words. Include what she likes to do at school, what she hopes to do, making new friends, etc...You will read this book to her daily, twice a day, at night time and before dropping her off at school. You can change this story as she becomes more comfortable.

-reassure her that you will come back to her. As I have said above, what you feel, she will feel. Project positive outcome. :) I know it is hard on you. Sometimes it is more difficult for parents, than it is for their lo.

-Help your LO maintain relationships with her friends from daycare. Set play dates as soon as possible. :)

Let's hope that your LO will do great and you will not have to use any of these tips. Good luck! :)

-

Yay! You found a Montessori! I'm wondering the same thing because we plan on sending my son to a new preschool in a few months and I'm kind of nervous. He LOVES his daycare and loves his teachers and friends. So I don't know how he'll do in a brand new environment. sigh.

I am taking DD out of daycare (tomorrow is her last day!) and starting her in a Montessori program. I wonder how her first day will go and if she will cry. She's always happy at daycare drop off, but she is so used to that already. I am nervous! Any tips?
