@PurplePeony: Our DD is the same- she totally gets it and is ready, but refuses to totally train.

She will tell us that her diaper is dirty and sometimes she will even "help" change herself- she gets a fresh diaper and wipes for herself and takes off her own diaper under supervision, and then pulls on the clean pullup. She will pee and poop in the potty if we ask her to try and put her on there at a good moment, but she doesn't volunteer to go potty. She is over 2.5 and this has been going on for about 6 months.

My daughter (15 mo) says EEWWWW when we change her diaper and when she poops. She says it when her diaper is clean too so I don't know if it's s coincidence or not. It's hilarious though! :silly:

She sometimes tells us she needs to go potty and sometimes tells us she needs her diaper changed. But she refuses to wear undies so we've had no luck potty training. She's physically ready, she just doesn't want to ("I'm not that big yet. I like diapers").

@LBee: So I don't know if this will be the same for other kids, but we just trained anyway, without him really signalling beforehand. For the first few weeks we had to set timers. Now he's finally telling us a lot of the time, though we still prompt. You might be waiting a long time if you wait for more self awareness.

@LBee: @ShootingStar: thanks, ladies for sharing. That is definitely a big difference of knowing after vs before. It'll be interesting to see how our LO does.

He used to tell us a lot afterwards. I don't think it had much bearing on potty training for us. Our biggest potty training obstacle was having to use pull-ups at daycare. We got lazy with them and they really held him back.

My son started doing this around the same age. He definitely understands WHEN it's happened, but has yet to be able to identify it PRIOR. That's sort of key to potty training. As a result, we haven't attempted (beyond just putting him on the potty). Hopefully others will chime in with better results, though.

I'm curious how many of your LOs started communicating that they needed their diapers changed before you started potty training. How old were they? Did this result in easier potty training (if you're there yet)?

We have talked to DD a lot about what's going on during her diaper changes or when it's obvious she's having a bm, but we've been surprised that at 13mos she's telling us most of the time when she needs a diaper change by patting her front diaper area. I am really hoping she'll be easy to potty train because of this, but also appreciate it may be a novelty to her at the moment & maybe she'll move on to new "tricks". Lol!
