We did CIO with checks three separate times before she was STTN. Once at 6 months to help her fall asleep alone, once at about 10-11 months after illness and once at about 15 months. She started STTN at 15-16 months.

We sleep trained at 7 months when LO's sleep took major hits after holiday visitors, teeth and ear infections during the 6th month. The first night was rough, but he caught on by nights 2 and 3. Has been STTN since (fingers crossed/knock on wood).

I think the answers make sense - if your LO STTN before 6 months, you don't NEED CIO! Everyone else did it.

@mrsrain: Yes, that's what worked for us with DS! Once his naps were good he started STTN soon after. Nighttime CIO scares me and I hope if/when we do some naptime training it will help the nights too.

No option that fits us, but #2 had no CIO and STTN at 4 months reliably. We don't think Theo will get there that quickly because we haven't been as strict with sleep hygiene.

I voted that we did not do CIO and LO STTN before 6 months.

That said, we did CIO for naps but never had to for nights. I do think that getting her into a good nap routine helped her to get to the point where she was able to STTN.

No. We actually had to sleep train 3 times because sickness/teething set us back. She finally STTN around 12.5 months when we night-weaned. The silver lining is she is 20 months and we haven't had any regressions at all since then *knock on wood*

I didn't answer the poll because we did CIO at 5 months but not for STTN. We did it to stop the many excess wakeups and get her to figure out how to stay asleep on her own. So when we did CIO, we went from 8-10 random wakeups per night to 2-3 night nursing sessions. We never did CIO again and she eventually dropped each nursing session until she STTN on her own at 10 months.

@twodoghouse: Oh no! What GI issues are you discovering? We have had our fair share of stuff, but I hope we get it figured out soon!

And I'm so jealous of all of you who got your kiddos to STTN without CIO! We never did nighttime CIO, but after we nap trained DS (CIO due to naps being too short) he started STTN since I guess he learned self-soothing skills.

DD is 3.5 months and her naps are way too short and after we put her in bed for the night she wakes every 30-45 minutes until at least 10pm. So, I'm wondering if/when we might need to do at least some nap training so she can learn how to fall/stay asleep on her own and I'm absolutely dreading it. :(

We did gentle sleep training (Pick up/put down) and DD STTN a couple of times between 6 mo-1yo but it's cause we were slacking on dropping the 4/5am feed + teething and leaps. Since 13 mo she's been consistently sleeping and I can see now that her wakeups clearly had good reasons. I'm glad I never cried her out: she needed comforting.

I didn't vote because we never CIO for any wakings, only for falling asleep. So, technically, I guess the answer is yes, he did sttn without CIO. When we did sleep train to fall asleep, he was already down to one waking, on his own. Shortly after we sleep trained (like 2-3 weeks), he dropped the last waking.

I don't know if this counts? I guess technically we do CIO but we don't let him cry for more than 5-8 minutes. He sleeps 8pm-8am (with a quick feed at 5:30) 95% of the time at almost 8 months.

She did off and on from pretty early on, 8 hrs by 3 months old and 10 at about 4 months. She did 10-12 hours for awhile although I can't remember the specifics. However we did sleep train during early toddlerhood when she just couldn't seem to get back on track and was waking up a lot.

We unfortunately had to do it twice. The first time only lasted a few weeks and then he seemed to always be teething so it was another two months before we tried again. It was painful but he sleeps really well at night now and he has always been happier and eaten better when he's slept better. I'm not proud of letting him cry at 6, then 9 months, but I'm deeply grateful for good sleep for all of us now!

My 13 month old sttn 95% of the time. However, we share the bed and if I even attempt to put her in a crib she wakes up.

My 2.5 year old sttn and we had to use CIO. He was still waking up at probably 13-14 months. I can even remember being up with my NB and up with him occasionally at 17 month. He never wakes up now.

If STTN is in baby terms (5-6 hour stretches) then LO did it on his own starting around 5 months. He still woke up 2 x's a night to eat until 9 months but gradually dropped all feeds on his own and now at 15 months sleeps 630-7am.

I never felt worried about weaning him off night feeds because he was very good about eating and going right back to sleep and I felt if he was hungry then he was hungry.

I didn't vote because I feel like our situation isn't easily categorized there. We did CIO at 6 mo because I was not just rocking to sleep and a few times overnight, but having to hold her and rock her almost all night long and get no sleep myself. After sleep training (the very first night) she not only put herself to sleep with no rocking, but when she woke overnight she just needed me to pop her paci in and shed go back to sleep alone again. So no, at 10.5 mo she is not STTN still. But she does go to sleep alone and her wake ups are very fast now. I feel like it is a very vast improvement.

Some sleep training (parent attended, but crying involved) to get her to fall asleep at six months. She didn't sleep through the night consistently until she was 19 months old. We did cio at various times, and it always helped lengthen sleep or get her to fall asleep, but she STTN when she was damn well ready and not a moment before.
