Neither my brother nor I have ever had formula. She BF for over a year (got pregnant with me when my brother was 6 months, so still managed to BF for 6+ months while pregnant) with each of us, pumped while at work and donated milk as well. However my mom is super supportive with me breast feeding and is always trying to feed me special Chinese meals to try to boost my supply (I have low supply and also have to supplement). She thinks I should try to give LO whatever I can out of the boob for a year (which is my plan!) DH was exclusively formula fed. But MIL is very nice and supportive of my breast feeding as well. She gave us the boob until 1 year. With my brother, she EBF until 3 months and supplemented with formula until 6 months. She had to go back to work at 3 months with my brother and it diminished her supply. She said they didn't really use pumps back then. She has been VERY negative about me BFing, and now that H is 7 months old and tugs at my shirt and puts her face in my chest when she wants boob, my mom thinks it's ridiculous that I'm still doing it. She thinks it's extra nasty that H can even "ask" for it now. She even tells other people in our family in front of me how gross she thinks it is that I'm always giving H "titty" (I f'ing hate that word!). My mom has this Graco carseat, I dont know which one, and H is not crazy about it I think bc it's not as padded as her Maxi Cosi, so she fusses more in the carseat. To stop the fussing, I will absolutely nurse her in the car seat when she gets hysterical and my mom rips me to pieces about that, she cant believe it. She's like, "What if someone sees you?!? I have to drive extra fast to pass people!" And I get so annoyed and tell her that I dont care, I'm never going to be embarassed about or apologize for feeding my child.</p> <p>I am home visiting right now and her comments have driven me crazy all week. Especially when my SIL, due in Oct with their first, and my mom have had several BF-Bashing conversations around me, just about how nasty BFing is. I don't think she ever tried BFing at all. She says she didn't with my siblings because they were both born with two teeth. Not sure what her excuse is for me. Her views on BFing aren't very good. She was not supportive when I was BFing DS and constantly pushed formula. She said that the nurses pressured her to give him formula and could not believe that she would even want to breastfeed him. She didn't give in and breastfeed all 3 of us. That was stressful enough (2 babies plus an extended hospital stay), ahdvon top of that there wasn't a lot of bf support at the time. She supports me breastfeeding, but would have supported ff, too. I was born in the early 80's and she BF me for a little over a year and I never really took a bottle. She BF my younger brother until almost 1.5 years. She's obviously very supportive of me BF my little guy (he's 8 months old). My MIL didn't BF exclusively, but I think she tried a little with some of her kids. She had 8 children and I don't think she had the time to be the only one able to feed the baby. I'm the oldest and I think she went about the longest with me, 6 weeks. That's when I reached my birth weight. Then the rest of the kids were a short period of EBFing, then supplementation, then straight formula or other alternatives. Her mom and sister had similar success. It's kind of a hard thing to in our family, apparently.
