@Crumbs: I am going through this right now. LO is 9 weeks old and she started off sleeping through the night if she was nursed down. Now, nothing puts her to sleep. Last night, after nursing I rocked her on and off for 6 hours before she finally went down.

It seems to be a game of diminishing returns. Nursing no longer knocks her out nor do walk in the carrier or stroller. Rocking which was all I had left is failing too. I'm at my wits end. Pedi says to put her down drowsy and let her cry because she is a big girl and will be fine but I'm not sure. I just think that my constant rocking isn't helping and is only making things worse.

@Crumbs: my LOs sleep deteriorated at 6 Weeks and then got better. Then at 3 months it got bad again. I remember for a whole month (at about 9 weeks on) we would put her in her crib awake for naps and bedtime and she did great! She would put herself to sleep. But now she is 3 months and refuses to nap (was up for thirteen hours straight the other day) and needs to be put in her crib asleep. It just seems like there is no pattern. Every time they develop more or go through a growth spurt they go through a crazy sleep phase it seems. I have no idea if she will get better from here!

I'm bumping this. My LO is almost 2 months old and so far, her schedule has gotten worse! She won't sleep unless I'm holding her and is back to sleeping during the day and up at night.

I'm curious how the new batch of babies are sleeping.

Good to know! Our's will be 4 months right after the first of the year but he's still waking up for one feeding and then stirs around 5am...I can't wait until he can make it longer! Maybe when he gets solids it will be even better. Got to fill that belly up :)

@venice4504: completely different for every baby. some do it at 2 months, some at 6, some at 1 year, some never. there is absolutely no rule of thumb when it comes to sleeping through the night.

we sleep trained charlie when he was 4 1/2 months and that's when he started sleeping through the night. if we hadn't, i don't think he would have slept through the night for months and months and possible ever!

So when do most babies actually sleep through the night, like an honest 10-12+ hour stretch with no wake ups?

as a general rule she was always getting better but she had a few little bumps where she would sleep horribly for a while before she would go back to sleeping better.

We are all messed up right now because of the four month wakeful and starting daycare. Before all that she would sleep from 8:30-8:30 with two feedings. Now it's 2-3 feedings in ten hours.

@venice4504: it does depend on the kid. babies wake up for more than just feedings (eg if they wake up and can't put themselves back to sleep and need to be rocked back to sleep), so they can wake up more and more as they get older. that was the case with charlie.

Worse at night. She started as a pretty good sleeper only waking up once or twice now she wakes up more.
I think it's because we've been traveling a lot and changed her bed so this past month she's been all over the place. After Christmas hopefully we'll be able to straighten things out a bit since we won't be traveling as much.

So is sleeping just dependent upon the kid? I was under the impression that babies will start dropping their feedings as they don't need them (aka sleep through them). Am I wrong?

Spot on with Andrea!
2 feedings a night until around 5 weeks, then 1 feeding, now at 2 months she's sleeping until 5am. For a week after her shots her sleep pattern was interrupted.

We're currently at 3.5 months and his sleeping is a bit better. Goes down at 7:30, sleeps for about 6-7 hours and needs some food (not much maybe 2-3 oz) but then we're having a hell of a time to get him to go back to sleep until 7am or so. The majority of time he ends up next to me and sleeps great. If only he did that in his crib.

My daughter is 5 months now and I was able to get her to the point where I can just put her to bed and she'll fall asleep on her own and only waking up once a night. She still wakes up only one time a night but I have to now rock her a bit. Part of this is due to my son's sleep regression lately. We have to re-train him now at 2 years old..sigh. Not sure how to go about sleep training the second without interfering with the first. But it looks like we do have to do some sleep training with her as well.

My LO's sleep was pretty good from the beginning. The day she turned 2 months old she began sleeping through the night. She's only 3 months old now but we've only had 2 nights where she's woken up.
Napping is a whole different story. She will only nap for 30 minutes or so in her crib, but if she fell asleep in her car seat she will nap for a couple hours. Or she'll take long naps on me. I'm so torn on what to do because she can clearly put herself to sleep at night or in her car seat or on me but daytime naps in the crib she just can't figure it out. I'm debating nap training.

We lucked out and didn't have to do night time sleep training. She slept in 4 hour stretches as a newborn with 2 night time feedings. Then at 5 weeks she dropped 1. Then at 8 weeks she stopped waking and slept 12 hours from then on with hiccups here and there due to developmental changes.

Different story altogether for daytime as she does not like to nap and has gone in and out of good napping phases.

Her night time sleep got better. She would sleep a little longer every night, and when we stopped swaddling her she found her thumb and started sleeping 12 hours at 2 1/2 months.

I know we're spoiled, and in for a surprise when we decide to have another baby because they're not going to be a good sleeper.

Olive started out a decent sleeper. She was doing a 5 hour stretch then a 4 hour stretch. But since she turned 2 months old, she's been wide awake after her bath. The only way she'll sleep is if you hold her. When you put her in the crib, she's wide awake. This often goes on until 1-2am! But then after that point, she sleeps perfectly fine all night in the crib, and in the daytime for all her naps.

She's also started waking up every 3 hours at night. Charlie's sleep started getting worse and worse at the 2 month mark as well.

I was hoping we'd have a naturally good sleeper on our hands, but alas I don't think we do!

Did your newborn's sleep become better and better or worse and worse? I'm just hoping to avoid sleep training!
