Not really, though there were a few things I genuinely don't like (still to this day.... I'm looking at you seafood!) and so she wouldn't push me to eat them as a kid. I'm a pretty well rounded eater though.

Never, though I'm glad for that now. I was one of maybe 2-3 non-white kids in my school and I always felt ashamed of the "crazy" chinese leftovers I'd bring at lunch. That sad schoolgirl flashback in My Big Fat Greek Wedding? That was me...

Mom did for my brother, but I would eat just about anything. He ate hot dogs, sandwiches, grilled cheese, pizza, hamburgers, etc whenever the rest of the family had regular food. If he sat at the table long enough, he got his way.

I feel really strongly about not becoming a short order cook in our house!

Eta: I read a book about french eating habits and I liked the idea behind: "you don't have to eat it all, but you do have to try it"....so you don't force your kids to clear their plate (which i think is a bad habit, anyways) but you make them try it. if not, tough shit, you go without!

Nope. We ate what she served us, period. If we didn't like the main dish, we can eat our rice and side dishes but we had to finish all of our soup. She also made us eat veggies every night (even if it's just a few bites). I LOVE veggies now so I can't even imagine not liking them. My son is a super picky eater right now so we try to cater a little to his needs, but not by much. We still serve him what we eat, but we'll maybe bake his fish instead of giving him steamed fish. Or we'll add some honey to his veggies. But we still serve him what we eat.

Definitely not! And on top of not catering, my brother and I were expected to eat everything on our plate and we were not allowed to leave the dinner table until we did so, nor were we allowed to reheat our food. I have childhood memories of falling asleep crying at the dinner table and expecting to at least wake up in my bed, but nope! Still at the table, still had to eat. This is why I am the least pickiest eater alive and can eat anything. Looking back, I appreciate my parent's efforts and do hope to follow in their footsteps, but not be quite as strict or intense about it!

She didn't really cater and make separate meals though I think she probably tended towards meals that got more positive results. There were a couple things that I really didn't like - mashed potatoes and some canned veggies. They still got made sometimes so usually I skipped over them. Since we ate dinner early we had a bowl of cereal before bed most nights so I just poured myself a bigger bowl on nights where I didn't eat as much for dinner.

Nope! I had to eat what she made, but she never really made anything I didn't like so it wasn't an issue :) But of course just by nature of being a kid I would fuss about some things (not wanting to eat ALL my vegetables) but I would still have to at least TRY everything on my plate.

Not a chance! She made 1 meal, and if we didn't like it ... tough luck! We all have 1-2 things that we don't like, but we learned how to make it palatable enough to eat, or avoid it (mushrooms for my sister, ribs for another sister, and green beans for me). We didn't have to eat everything on our plates, but we did have to take a bite of everything. I plan on running mealtimes in my house the same way.

of course not! I didn't even know such a thing existed! We ate the same food as a family and I didn't know there was an option to refuse food until now! I was dumb!! But then I guess my mom did make a fried egg for me most of the time as I like to eat eggs. Occasionally she makes a special dish just for me too.

My mom has never purposefully gone out of her way to cater to my eating habits (I'm a vegetarian), but she cooks so much and always has such a wide variety of food that there was always something for me to have. Their side dish could double as my main course, for instance.

My nana, on the other hand, absolutely goes out of her way to make everyone's "favorite" at holidays... which makes for a huuuuuuge meal!

Sometimes. I was the only one in my family who couldn't eat spicy food (still can't... It hurts!) and I didn't like Korean food. So usually my parents would broil a fish or something like that, and my veggie would be pickles. (I don't even like pickles!) as I got older it got easier because I could cook my own entrée so they could eat what they wanted. So if they were having a spicy Korean stew with rice I'd pan fry a chicken breast, microwave some frozen veggies and have that with rice. I ate a lot of Stouffers lasagna!

Sometimes my mom would make Korean food without the spices, take out my portion and then add the spices, but usually this doesn't work too well with Korean food!

My mom never catered to us! She made one meal and we all ate it. There were a few exceptions: There is one Korean meal I refuse to eat (sujebi and/or kalgooksu - both are dough-based noodle soups) and because it was the only thing I wouldn't eat, my mother would let it slide.

But sometimes I suffered through dinner because I just didn't want to eat what was served but I didn't feel like I had any other option - I just knew that if I didn't eat what was served, it meant that I didn't eat at all.
