In fact I was the first in my family to graduate from college. I went because it was a dream of my late grandfather's to go, which is why he came to this country. They always made education a priority in our minds. Although they did realize and understand that college is not for everyone. My mom took some classes in accounting but never got a degree. My mom is a huge reader though and always valued learning. Just a normal public high school out a ways in the country. She found out she was pregnant the summer before her senior year of high school and was married a month later. When she tried to come back they said that she was a bad influence for getting married and they didn't want other girls to think getting married young was glamorous or something? I don't know, seems crazy to me! Nothing about teen pregnancy is or was glamorous. Although my parents did beat the odds and are still married 39 years later! My inlaws both are chemical engineers, and my FIL has his MBA. MIL didn't finish her MBA.</p> <p>Both DH and really value education as a result. My mom wishes she had finished because she doesn't know what she will do once she can't do hair anymore. My dad graduated high school and went to work in construction. My mom got pregnant at 17 (my dad was 20) and they got married right away. My mom got kicked out of high school for getting married (oddly enough they were okay with the pregnancy but not the marriage?) but got her GED before my brother was born during what would have been her senior year of high school. </p> <p>College was never even an option in my house-- we WERE going. My parents both worked their asses off, often at multiple jobs each, to give us a comfortable life and they wanted things to be easier for us. Not going to college wasn't an option for any of my siblings.</p> <p>I'm not sure my ILs finished high school, but they both instilled a love of learning in their kids and 7 of the 8 finished college before getting married and 2 have PhDs. That's where he received all of his training. My mom went to trade school right after high school. </p>
