Money was tight so we rarely had junk food around the house but my mom would make Asian desserts at home so we did have plenty of sweets. :)

Yes! We ate every 'bad' food under the sun! My friends loved coming over to pig out at our house! It's a wonder how my sisters and I aren't overweight as adults and have generally healthy eating habits now!

We rarely had chips, soda, or fast food. They were special treats. We couldn't have cereal with more than 3g of sugar per serving. We occasionally had cookies or sweets, but they were always kept on the highest shelf. As we got older, my parents relaxed a bit.
Ideally, LO won't eat a lot of that stuff either. The challenge will be for DH and me, who are used to giving into our cravings and indulgences.

I feel that there was a pretty good balance. My family wasn't too healthy growing up, we ate frozen chicken potpies a lot but for the most part dinner was homecooked every night. We never ordered out/in since a family of 8 is expensive to eat out/in.

Our sweets were definitely limited, until we were teenagers, then we did what we wanted lol

I am definitely going to be more stringent with LO. We are cutting out the majority of sugar in our house and DH has surprisingly been very supportive and encouraging. We sweeten everything with honey or pure maple syrup instead. We don't even have an ounce of sugar in our house at this moment, and I don't plan on really letting LO have any. I've been finding more and more recipes that are healthier versions of bad foods - like chocolate chip cookies made with almond flour and sucanat instead of traditional flour and sugar. So LO can have that stuff :)

Growing up in Hershey, there was never a lack of chocolate in the house! And we also always had ice cream in the house. But we never snacked like crazy. We were allowed one snack, after dinner.

I actually wish that my parents had been more strict with swwets & junk food. We always had soda in the house & ate dessert every night. We also went to McDonalds and other fast food places fairly frequently (1-2 x per week). I have friends who never had sodas and fast food & they have a much easier time avoiding it now than I do!

My parents didn't keep a lot of junk food in the house. There was usually some ice cream or cookies but we couldn't have any without their permission and they would portion it for us.

I don't think they really restricted much of anything. We always ate dinners together (homemade) and my mom always made us our lunches when we were in school. Breakfasts were usually oatmeal or toast and juice. Thinking back, we almost always had pop (soda) in the house, but I think we were restricted to 1 a day and it was usually caffeine free (Sprite or 7up). We almost always had snacks...my dad loves sweets, so Little Debbie type things were always around, and I think we probably had chips most of the time, too.

One thing that was never allowed in our house was Kool Aid. I think the ONE TIME my mom allowed it, a babysitter spilled it on brand new carpet. That was the end of that!

I was (am?) a pretty picky eater, so unfortunately I was kind of a pain in the butt I think. I don't think they ever really made a huge deal out of food/snacks, besides always eating dinner together as a family. I somehow still ended up with a messed up relationship with food, but I'm a lot better now than I used to be!

We were on sugar lockdown growing up! My mom would let us have kool-aid sometimes, but she would only use half the amount of sugar. And cookies were few and far between. I won't be as strict with our kids, but won't just let them eat junk all the time either!

Yes, definitely junk foods were restricted. And my mom made dinner from scratch every night, so that was usually pretty healthy too.

We rarely kept soda or chips in the house, those were “treats”. We did drink a lot of juice growing up – so that’s probably where we got the most sugar. At least it was real juice though, not Kool-Aid, etc.

With cookies, the only kind my mom bought were fig newtons which everyone but her hated. Blech. But she would make us cookies sometimes.

We didn’t get to have sugary cereals growing up either, except on vacations or when we stayed over with friends/relatives.
I think it worked, as now I don’t keep soda, cookies, sugary cereals in my home either.

We never had junk food in the house, but at my aunt's place. oh man! It was like the snack aisle at a grocery store! She had 4-5 types of cereal, 4-5 types of cookies, etc.

It depended on if my mom was on a diet! haha then we would have only healthy food in the house, but if she was not then we had some junk food. We never had pop in the house, but I remember chips, ice cream, and snacky foods at times! Especially on summer vacations since we were on our own (once my older sister was old enough to babysit us.)

I don't remember my parents ever restricting junk food, but I also don't remember eating a ton of it either.

We regularly had potato chips and ice cream and a bottle of soda, etc -- but I think my parents just lucked that my brother and I ate well for the most part without too many restrictions they had to put on us. We also didn't feel the need to go overboard, because we never thought we couldn't have it at all.

Yeah, we weren't allowed a lot of sweets. We got dessert after dinner but that was it. We didn't have an ice cream truck and never were allowed to get treats at gas stations. We had rice krispies or cheerios for cereal. If I want my kids to come up the same way, I'm going to have to change my was big time!

My parents were pretty lax about it...we were allowed to have chips (doritos were my fave), soda, candy...sometimes i would take a spoon and just eat a spoonful of sugar straight. haha. The only thing my mom restricted was cereal with marshmallows. So i never had lucky charms or count chocula cereal until i was in college. We all turned out a-ok! So I don't think I'll be limiting our kids intake of junk food, but my husband says he'll be more strict.

My mom didn't really limit our intake of sweets but my MIL didn't let my husband have hardly any sweets/junk food. I guess it worked because even to this day, he's really not into sugary/sweet treats. I'll let our LO have a treat once in a while but we're gonna try to limit it as much as possible.

My parents always packed a can of Sprite in my lunch bag during middle school and all my friends were jealous, and I didn't understand why! I think my parents let me drink soda (as long as it didn't have caffeine) because I drank plenty of milk too.

Yes and no. We never had soda or sugared cereal in the house. But when we got old enough to put stuff in the grocery cart.... we'd put all sorts of crap in there. My mom has 3 kids so it was hard to keep a good eye on us while we were shopping, so she'd always be surprised at checkout but she'd still buy it.
