I'd say I was happy and don't feel ripped off. There are definitely a lot of holidays we just didn't care about and I actually want to raise LO the same way. Looking back, what made it the most special was that the traditions they started were creative and well suited to our family. Picking out an decorating a christmas tree all together, hiding easter baskets on easter morning, using half-birthdays as an excuse to make a yummy dessert, cheese fondue on Christmas eve, staying up late playing card games and drinking sparkling apple cider out of nice glasses on new years eve. Christmas was lots of cookie baking, decorated the tree together, went for rides to see Christmas lights, had a special "appetizer" night after Christmas Eve mass. We had a plastic nativity scene we were allowed to play with. </p> <p>On Easter we got a basket with little treats and then a slip of paper that led us on a scavenger hunt--at the end we found a little bit bigger gift. </p> <p>New Years Eve meant special treats including pop! My mom went crazy (still does!) for holidays and birthdays. My birthday is a few days before Christmas and she always made me feel like it was special and kept it separate from any of the Christmas festivities. They were special in the fact that everyone got together, but we have no real traditions. My mom made biscuits and gravy and a candy cane pastry most years, but even that wasn't a given. It started on December 1st when my mom would replace our pillow cases with special christmas ones (they were just christmas patterns on them). Then we would do all the decorating together. I used to love picking out a tree and decorating it with my family. </p> <p>On christmas morning they would cover the top of the stairs with newspaper, so we couldn't see downstairs.
