I was lucky and my grandfather paid for a large chunk of each of our college education (for all of the grandkids).

My parents covered the rest. In my immediate family, we kids were responsible for all extra expenses but everything school-related was covered. I hope that I can do the same for our little one(s).

My parents couldn't afford to pay for my college tuition but I managed to get a big chunk covered my grants and financial aid, with the remaining balance in student loans. Overall, my loan balance is low compared to my friends since I went to a private university (go Orangemen!). Ever since I got a part time job in high school, I hadn't asked my parents for money - it was enough to pay for my extracurricular activities and I saved enough from summer jobs to pay for my first semester of books. Then I had work study during college to have spending money. Moving off campus junior and senior year also helped since it was much cheaper than dorms and meal plan.

My Dad was going to college at the same time I was, so he had no money left over after paying his own tuition to help with mine. My Mum was raising 3 other teenagers on her own and barely had enough money for that, let alone for my tuition.

Luckily for me, where I'm from student loans come from the government, and are totally interest free as long as I stay in the country. And also, luckily for me, my husband is in a position where, if we do decide to leave the country, he can afford to pay it all off for me :)

DH paid his own way through school by working, but dropped out before he graduated ;)

I went to a state school (UC also), but my parents didn't pay. They *did* help both of my brothers, who went to private schools. I took out federal loans to cover tuition, books, and rent. My older brother and I were in school at the same time, and I knew it would have been a burden for my parents to help us both. My brother's tuition was much higher than mine so I told my parents that I could handle the loans on my own.

My parents paid for undergrad for me and my sister. When it came to grad school, my parents told me they'd pay for grad school or a wedding. I chose the wedding. I can take out loans for grad school but not for a wedding! So I paid for (and will for 10 more years) grad school. And my parents threw us a gorgeous wedding! (c:

My mother paid a little. I grew up with a single mother who didn't make much money. I was only able to afford college with grants, loans and a job during the term and during summers. DH's parents paid for his completely. We both took out loans for our professional degrees.

Yes, my parents paid for all 4 years of mine and my twin brother's in-state undergrad as well as my older brother's private, out-of-state undergrad and med school (I'm convinced he's the favorite :) and all of our living expenses/books/etc. DH's parents paid for his undergrad and MBA.
It made such a huge difference in our early professional lives to start off with $0 instead of minus $50,000+. We are both extremely grateful to them and hopefully will be able to do the same for our children.
My parents told us from day 1 "we'll pay all of your schooling to get a degree in the field of your choice." Funny enough - I'm almost 30 and decided to get my real estate license and my parents insisted on paying for the 40 hour online class because it still counted as "my education". They're the best!

both my and DH's parents paid for our college years through savings. they both had money left in our college savings accounts after we graduated, so i used that to live on after college while i continued some education and DH used it to buy a car!

we're so thankful that we came into our marriage with savings and that's all because our parents were able to save and pay for our education.

Nope. I actually took summer jobs during high school to save money. And I also worked during all 4 years of college to pay for my tuition and living expenses. My parents gave me a few hundred dollars month for books and stuff. But most of it I paid on my own. Thankfully I didn't have any student debt when I graduated.

Before my grandfather died he made sure to set aside funds so that all of his grandkids could attend whatever colleges they wanted to. I feel ridiculously lucky that I was in this situation... especially since I attended a very expensive private college. So no, my parents didn't pay for my college, but my grandparents did. Now when it's time for our kids to go to college my parents are hoping to pay for their college education. In turn, I will try my very hardest to be able to pay for my grandkids education someday.

My parents/scholarships paid for my first year of undergrad, then I switched schools and worked full time and went to school full time and paid for the rest of college myself. I graduated with my B.A. with basically no debt (under 5k in student loans), but post-graduate work did me in.

My husband’s parents paid (I believe) for all his undergrad, but Masters and PhD did him in.

Our loans will be paid off just before LO enters middle school, and that’s with an aggressive payment plan :/

My grandma invested in a college savings program when I was very young, and by the time I was 18, it covered 4 years of tuition at any public university in Texas.

Room, board, books, etc was not covered, and I was advised by my parents to take out every loan that was offered to me. They did not pay for my college.

I worked part-time for spending money. And now I have lots of loans to pay off.

My parents paid for college and law school. They didn't go to college themselves, so they really wanted their kids to be able to get as much education as they could. My DH on the other hand has a load of debt from law school. I'm so not excited about paying them off.

My dad made us pay tuition and books, and he paid for either housing if we went away or a car if we stayed home to commute. I stayed home and got a pretty sweet set of wheels (Pontiac Sunfire, oh yeah!) and my sister moved away so he paid her rent for 4 years.

I had to take out a student loan to pay my tuition, but finished with less than $17000 in student debt, which should be gone by the end of this year!

My parents saved for my college education, which I so appreciate. I had a scholarship, but my college fund didn't end up covering my tuition, books and living expenses completely, so I took out a couple small loans to make up the difference my senior year. Looking back, I could have been more frugal with the money I earned at my part-time job and taken out smaller loans, but hindsight is 20/20! I had a great college experience, so no regrets.

I went to a VERY expensive school and got VERY little financial aid since my dad made too much money at the time (and got laid off just a few years after I graduated). I am completely in the dark about what gets paid for while you're actually at school because my dad took care of everything except spending money (which I worked jobs for). All the loans are in my name, so after I graduated I paid my student loans and my dad would send me a check for half the payment. Recently he had to stop but I didn't mind... we are in very similar financial situations so I'd rather take on the payments myself.

Rob Sr. went to his ivy league expensive school almost for free...!! He claims he just researched and applied for scholarships and workstudy programs and just got a lot of them. And I mean a LOT... his student loan balance (all federal) is MINISCULE compared to mine. And now that he's in academia, he takes classes for graduate degrees for free. After we got married I told him how much my student loan balance was and said "sorry!" Haha... he married into a lot of debt :( I had a lot of guilt over it while I was a SAHM but now that I'm back on track with my career, I'm feeling good!

My parents paid for what they could of my regular tuition as well as any classes I took that were not covered by regular tuition (over 21 credit, summer classes, and abroad programs). I double majored in 4 years so I took a lot over the regular curriculum.

I went to a very expensive private school and even though I had scholarship money, it really didn't make a dent. I still have a sizable loan to pay back, but am so thankful for the help my parents gave me.
