I worked after school at the mall and also did some tutoring/babysitting to pay for it. All of my money went to the car and at that time, it was SO worth it! I won't be providing a car for my kids either. I would expect them to work while keeping up their grades. The only exception is if they do volunteer work after school and stick with it. After my first year of college, they bought me a used car with the condition I would start paying it back after college, and had to pay for my own insurance, but when I graduated college they forgave the debt. When that car died I was in grad school and they fronted me the money to buy a new car, but I paid that back with interest! They probably could have sold it to someone else for more and they ended up getting a new car for themselves so they were generous. But then that car had all my sisters learning to drive on it too since I left it at home in college. Poor beat up car. I took it back after a couple years in college and it had so many little weird little things going on with it. When I went to college, I was supposed to buy it from them in payments, but they ended up gifting to me for Christmas.</p> <p>I think if we are in the financial position, we will probably buy our child a modest car, with the expectation that they will pay for gas and maintenance. I do like the idea of them saving and us matching it, too.
