I know my mom spent a lot of time ferrying me around to dance classes and music lessons when I was a little older. And I distinctly remember that she took me on nature walks, etc., particularly when we went on vacations. My parents were great parents and my mom was an elementary school teacher. I remember mostly playing outside with friends or doing more artsy-type activities by myself...sometimes playing with my sister (3 years younger). I think we probably played board games or cars together, but I think my mom's role was more of making sure we had activities and then letting us go.</p> <p>Thinking back actually made me feel a lot less anxious about LO being an only child. I was very happy as a child and felt like I was "parented" very well even without us "playing" together frequently. My sister and entertained ourselves - we read, colored, played outside. My mom traveled a lot for work, so my dad was often single-parenting so he was busy making meals and packing lunches and all that good stuff. </p> <p>I'm kind of conscious about this with D. Fostering independence is important to me. We check in with him often so that he knows we're right there, but we let him just sit and "read" to himself or play with his toys on his own. My dad would play catch, rough house, build forts and build with legos/tinker toys/lincoln logs-- but it was more of a special type of thing in not daily or even weekly. We would find our own entertainment, whether it was playing in our backyard or watching TV. Any my folks would try to get us toys whenever they could afford to keep us occupied. My parents always worked or were at church, so it wasn't like we felt they were out having fun without us. On the weekends they were always around doing chores around the house that we had to help with, but they never really played WITH us (well, except my dad would play Nintendo with us sometimes, but that's only because he really loved Tetris). </p> <p>Perhaps that's why I feel like its so odd that modern parenting is so involved. My parents worked all the time, we didn't have that many family activities, and they didn't play with us, and yet we always knew our folks loved us. There was no question about that. (I liked to sit by myself and play so no one would judge me for talking in different voices. I was also the third child, so sometimes left out)</p> <p>I remember it being special when our parents played with us though. Once or twice our mom played in the snow with us and it made a great memory. A few times my dad dress up in a vest and tie (no shirt) and carried a walking stick and joined us for tea parties.</p> <p>They didn't play with us everyday or anything, but when they did, they made it really special. While I don't know if my parents parented me out of necessity vs. want, I think they were just busy, working, raising two kids, etc. My mom worked long hours so I remember being with my dad more. However, everything else you wrote I could have written myself. I don't remember being played with ever, and the only "trips" I remember are with the daycare I went to. </p> <p>When I was very young my dad did play with me. But it was weird stuff. We used to lay on the carpet and move the carpet so we could see the plastic base (of the carpet) and then we would "hide" (nothing) in there and then go try and find it. HAHA. I'm the oldest of five, so I have more memories of day-to-day playing with siblings. That said, my parents were really good about cooking up outings and activities for us.
