I have a very distinct, clear memory of my dad reading with me and teaching me how to read by underlining words I didn't know and having me try again. I think more than them just reading to me, it helped that they modeled reading to us. Until I was in sixth grade my dad woke me up every morning with a story. When I was younger it was always a Berenstain Bears book, and we switched to Hank the Cowdog books when I got older (would read a chapter each morning). It was great, and I hope to do the same with my son.
