When we lived abroad, they'd line up some of their friends to participate since it wasn't the norm and then they'd drive us to those homes. They took us around our neighborhood when we were stateside. My dad knew about the neighborhoods in beverly hills that would give out the full size candy so he and my mom would drive us out there and drop us off and sit in the car and watch us walk the neighborhood from the car. OMG that sounded like such a long, horrid night! She was terrifying so I held my neighbors hand instead. And we only went to houses where we knew who lived there. She made mini pizzas that looked like Jack o lanterns and Koolaid with spider ice cubes. My grandmother's birthday was on Halloween so we had a birthday party with the family every year instead.</p> <p>I still have a hard time remembering to celebrate because I"m not used to it, but managed to get LO a costume last year. The first year I went (kindergarten I think because I came to the US when I was close to 4) I went with friends and their mom. Then with an older cousin the next year. Then pretty much on my own every year after that. Back then we got apples and ate them-- the horror! It's crazy to think how much freedom we had just a generation ago because that was the norm for all the kids in my neighborhood.</p> <p>What about you? </p>
