I don't do it very often, and definitely didn't when she was an infant. The drops smelled/tasted horrible and it was a fight to get them in her. Now, I put them in her yogurt and she eats it up.

I asked our ped about this, she said that even with being outside, the pollution is an issue and you're not getting as much Vit D as you think you are by being outside.

I was surprised to hear that, even though it's really logical.

Yes, the National Health Service here recommends giving children aged 6 months to 5 years vitamins A, C and D supplements:

"Vitamin D only occurs naturally in a few foods, such as oily fish and eggs. It is also added to some foods such as fat spreads and breakfast cereals. The best source of vitamin D is summer sunlight on their skin. However, it’s sensible to keep your child’s skin safe in the sun. Children shouldn’t be out too long in the sun in hot weather. Remember to cover up or protect their skin before it turns red or burns.
It's important that children still receive vitamin drops, even if they get out in the sun.
All babies and young children aged six months to five years should take a daily supplement containing vitamin D in the form of vitamin drops, to help them to meet the requirement set for this age group of 7-8.5 micrograms of vitamin D per day. However, babies who are fed infant formula will not need vitamin drops until they are receiving less than 500ml (about a pint) of infant formula a day, as these products are fortified with vitamin D. If you are breastfeeding your baby and you didn’t take vitamin D supplements throughout pregnancy, your health visitor may advise you to give your baby vitamin drops containing vitamin D from the age of one month."

Same thing here as @lamariniere: stated. They're prescribed to all infants for the first two winters here. So currently both of my kids take Vit D. Even if you go outside every day in winter in these nordic regions you don't get enough Vit D even as an adult.

Carlson drops are supposed to be good-- no nasty smell or taste.

Our pediatrician recommended it, but I decided against it. We live in SoCal, kids were both born in summer, and my mom takes them for 2+ hour walls to the park everyday.

Everyone in my family takes vitamin d - baby, todfler, hubby, and myself. The kids get drops, which I buy at Whole Foods - we've had a few different brands; I just make sure I get infant ones - some say 4yrs+.

We've done vit D all year. It's 1 drop per day ... nothing that I could imagine would make her sick (it's such a little amount). I might look into a different brand?

Vit D levels are very low in the winter.

I know people suggest it doesn't transfer, but my midwives were always suggesting I be cautious with the vit d (I was taking it too, and they said it we were outside that day, to not give her the drops).

Maybe a 2nd opinion from a different medical professional would be best.

I was surprised that some brands have some added stuff or unhealthy oils, I bought one that is made with olive oil and another brand with coconut oil. Never seemed to bother him.

Just learned about it a few weeks ago at our baby prep class. We haven't seen a ped, but the public health nurse recommended it.

We're Canadian, and definitely don't get enough vitamin D here in the winter. However, there has been a surge of vitamin D deficiencies in modern families over the last decade or more, simply because people's lifestyles have changed and people aren't put spending as much time outside. It's not just a problem here in Canada. I believe formula contains a sufficient amount of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is the one thing that there isn't enough of in breast milk. Try a brand that only has bit D in it instead of the combined vitamins. Baby D drops work well for most.

The pediatrician recommended it, I bought it and I never gave him any. He was born in the spring, in California and I just made sure he got plenty of sun. If it was winter where we couldn't be outside nearly every day I wouldn't think twice. But we got multiple blood test for all sorts of things for his other issues and his vitamin d was never low.
