We started in 1st grade (!) and in high school we had a semester-long class devoted to all the different methods of birth control, abortion, and adoption. There was also the dreaded Baby Think-It-Over where you had to carry a lifelike doll in a carrier for 24 hours and it would cry at random times, day and night, and you couldn't be separated from it because the only way to make it stop crying was with a key attached to your wrist. That thing was heavy! And if you held it wrong or took too long to turn it off you got an abuse indicator and your grade went down.

@sheskrafty: LOL @ "Petting is a no-no"!!!

I went to Catholic school and it was fairly progressive, it seems. I mean, there was no putting condoms on bananas or anything, but birth control was discussed.

Perhaps my favorite sex-ed related story was when we had the "this is how babies are made"/puberty chat in 5th grade. There was a chart with a picture of a naked baby boy and one of the girls in my class asked, "What's that red thing?" to which the instructor answered, "That's the baby's penis." Shockingly enough, that girl is now a pediatrician!

Yes and it haunts me to this day! We moved when I started 7th grade - so I was already awkward AND the only new kid in a Catholic school. The teacher picked me to read out loud the raciest paragraph in the whole book called "Petting is a no-no". It was horrific!!

Yeah, tons. I also had it in church (Unitarian). I was in an AIDS education teen theater group too, which was just as nerdy as it sounds. I was very well educated. I was still a dumbass teenager who took stupid risks, but at least I knew how dumb they were.

Kind of. They talked about the human body and split girls vs boys. Gave boys condoms and girls tampons. Then they put us together to talk about STDs and HIVs.

We didn't have "sex ed" we had "physical education" where we learned about our bodies, puberty, changes and stuff. We didn't cover anything sex related. I think they should, but I don't make the rules.

I did have a Parenting and Child Development class my freshman year, though. You had to pick that as one of your classes, so most people didn't take that.

We had a maturation program in 5th rade but I only remember hearing about tampons and that we need to use deodorant. We got some pretty sweet swag bags. And then we had like a sex topic in health class but nothing with too much detail.

We had it 6th (briefly), then 9th we had a health class that went into stds, birth control, pregnancy etc. I agree with you that it is very important to have children be educated about these topics... When we have kids we will definitely allow them to go to the classes and continue the discussions at home.

We had to take it in 5th grade, once in 7th or 8th, and then another class in high school. I went to a big public school district so it was part of the required curriculum. I think parents had to sign a form for the 5th grade one at least, and if they didn't I guess you would go into another class to sit or something.

Grammar school-- not at all. I went to Catholic school through high school. I do remember learning that masturbation was wrong in religion class in 8th grade though.
In my Catholic high school, we had some info, with super super brief info on birth control, but I pretty much learned it all on my own. My parents never really talked about it either-- my mom thought only 'sluts' had to go to the gynecologist before they were married. Seriously.
I want my kids to know all about it-- I'll talk to them, and hopefully they will also learn a lot in school, in case they don't want to listen to their mom talk about sex. I don't think it will change whether they are active or not, but it will change if they know how to protect themselves.

Yes. I grew up in Seattle and they started sex ed in elementary school which I think is really smart. It was age appropriate, and progressed into more information in middle school. The small town we moved to in high school started in high school…..and hello, the point is to get the info to kids BEFORE they do something; high school seems (sadly) a little late to start providing info.

My school district started sex ed in 6th grade. My parents didn't sign the release form, so during the class I had to go sit in the library. I was the only kid who's parents wouldn't sign the form. I'm going to make sure my kid's are educated about sex and the risks that go along with it because I was really naive.
