Well, my Mom sort of doesn't count since she knew he was going to propose before DH even knew it, lol!! And she helped orchestrate the entire ring purchase since DH didn't trust having it mailed to work, so he had it sent to her house.</p> <p>We were at my parents house for Christmas and I had to run out to my older sisters wedding dress appointment, so I was gone for about 3 hours. My Dad apparently decided to use that time to take a nice long nap, so my poor DH was nervously hoping he'd wake up. My all knowing Mom sensed what was going on and purposefully clattered a bunch of pots and pans in the kitchen next to where he was sleeping, which woke up the dog and my Dad. We'd only been dating for 5 months (long distance), so I was totally surprised by the proposal. I knew we would get married eventually, but I just hadn't envisioned getting engaged so quickly. He didn't have a ring and didn't get down on one knee. But it was perfect and romantic and I wouldn't change it for anything. I find the whole concept of asking parents for permission to marry outdated, and pretty insulting. The decision to marry was between me and him only, no others need be involved. (My dad would NOT have agreed to my ex - fortunately, I found out the guy ritualistically slaughtered his neighbor's livestock before we actually got married. It was important to me that the bridge I'd burned was back in place.)</p> <p>My parents and mom's parents came out for my birthday, and my dad did NOT respond to my husband's hints that he wanted to talk privately (I hung out with mom and grandma, he hung out with dad and grandpa.) So my husband called my dad a few days after they got home. My dad was in the middle of something, and apparently thought he sounded gruff (he didn't.) According to my dad, it was a short, pleasant conversation. I probably wouldn't have been with him if he didn't "click" with them. And they knew it was coming--we'd been together over 3 years, lived together and puppy-parented together. But, I'm an independent, grown up, woman, I don't need anyone's "permission" to make decisions about my life.
