@.twist.: So cute! My brother was the oldest, my sister was 2 1/2 (the same age my LO will be) and she loved me. She would treat me like her doll :)

DS is close to your Lo's age and I don't think he understands either. He keeps hitting my belly so I'm trying to teach him not to but he just doesn't get the baby thing.

@artbee: hahaha yes! That is very much like our 6 year old. The 9 year old is much more interested and always wants to give his little bro hugs and whisper secrets to him and listen to him and stuff. Apparently my baby belly talks about lego, you know, usual in-utero conversations!

@.twist.: My brother was 6 when I was born and he could care less. My dad went to his school after I was born to tell him and pulled him out of class. He was like ok, can I go back to class?

I don't know the extent to which he understood at the time, but we moved back home when I was 38 weeks and our nephew was about to turn two. The first time he saw me he put his hand on my stomach, smiled, and said "baby" which was pretty cute.

Our youngest is 6 and I'm not sure he got it at first.

I was already 20 something weeks when we told the boys and the youngest didn't really seem to care much. Then a few days later he looked at my belly and then at me and said ".... it's in there already?"

He's since come up with lots of ideas about how it will come out. Thankfully he hasn't straight up asked me how it gets out because I'm not sure I'm ready for that conversation yet. His mom just tells him I'm fat so maybe he just thinks I ate too much. lol!

Sort of, she's 20 months and will lift my shirt up and say BABY! Then she lifts her shirt up and say belly! When I started really showing, she started taking interest and really started playing with her sisters baby and stroller.

My son is almost 2.5 and we just told him last week (I'm 13 weeks). He gets it on some level. He figured out that the baby is going to have to come out at some point because he said we could use scissors to cut the baby out. I told him the doctor would take the baby out and he said the doctor could use scissors. And he randomly talks about the baby and seems curious. So he knows something is going on, but it's hard to tell to what extent.

I didn't bother telling her until I was getting a noticeable belly. She definitely understood at that point! She became very excited and talked about her new baby sister all the time.

I didn't think he understood anything -- he said I had a baby in my belly, and then that his dad had a baby in his belly (LOL!!) and that he had a baby in his own belly, and I thought, "this is hopeless." I thought when he met his sister he was going to be all WTF, but I think he understood way more than I thought he did.

I'm not sure what LO understands (she just turned 2), she kisses my belly and says hi to baby and sometimes tries to feed/tickle baby. I showed her some drawings in one of the pregnancy books of the baby inside the momma's tummy and that really made things seem to click more for her. I try to talk to her about how she'll share with baby.

I've been really surprised she recognizes some of her baby stuff from when she was little - she gets very insistent MINE!!! when she sees it, I have no idea how she remembers, they are stored at my parents in a closet, so we talk about sharing with baby and she just kind of stares at me. So I think she kind of gets it.

Don't know if he actually *understands* it per se, but one of his favorite things now is to point to my belly and exclaim, "Baby!" (And then he points to his dad's and says, "No baby!" Ha.) I would like to get him a book or two soon, though.

I think DD didn't really get until she could feel her brother moving around, see him kicking, etc... Even then I don't think she really "got" it but she understood there was "something" in my belly.

We tried telling my 2 1/2 year old nephew that I had a baby in my belly and he didn't get it, though I'm not with him all that much. Then we decided it might be better, since we didn't want him to think everyone with a big belly had a baby in there and say something really embarrassing.

LO is 22 months and has no clue what I'm saying when I say there's a baby in my belly. Which is good for now, I didn't really want her knowing much in case something happened. But when my bump grows, will she be able to understand more?
