I agree with the other folks! Definitely can't hurt to ask. I talked to my doctor early because I had irregular cycles and a family history of fertility issues. She just mentioned that I should start tracking my cycles which is so obvious but hadn't occurred to me, but it made me feel like I was preparing myself for an eventual pregnancy.

Definitely talk to your doc. If for no other reason, for insurance. If your insurance covers infertility treatment, most of them won't do anything for a year from when your doctor first has you on record for trying. So if your doctor writes it down in your chart now that you talked, then you might not have to wait a whole year if you have to seek help if needed (but of course I hope you don't have to!)

I did at my annual this past April, and knew we weren't trying for at least a year. My doctor was like, okay. Since a heart condition runs in the family, she did an EKG on me, and it came back normal, she said whenever we get pregnant if they think my heart may have some issues I'll be referred to a high-risk doctor. That was pretty much it. Oh, and she asked if I wanted BC pills in the meantime. Um, no. No need in loading my body up with chemicals just to have to wean it back off of them! For my own sake, I want to lose the 30lbs I gained while studying for the bar this summer. 6lbs down!

I don't think it's ever too early to bring up with your dr! The earlier you find out about problems the better. I started going to an re before I was ready to start ttc because I KNEW they would run a bunch of tests and it would take a long time - it ended up taking almost 4 months! The more info you have the better!

I had my annual in Feb, I told her we were going to start trying in April. I asked the questions I had, and one was when do I call if we aren't having luck. She told me to call in 6 months if my cycle's were regular (I went off BC and start trying right away) or after a year if they were regular.

I was really worried it was going to take us a while too. One based on my age, and she made me feel better about it. I ended up getting pregnant on cycle #3, so you never know. And that was with a traveling husband during the week. Good Luck!!!

I would certainly bring it up, I had some risk factors-endometriosis-and my doc said if I wasn't pregnant in six months, she'd send me to an RE.

I would definitely ask. Even if she doesn't run any tests, she might be able to give you tips that could help your specific situation, or things to look out for when you do start trying. I talked to my GYN about it almost a year before we started trying, because I knew I wouldn't be back in before that, although I was still on the pill at the time so it's not like we knew if my cycles would be normal. It never hurts to ask questions, I say.

I think it is totally okay to bring up your concerns with your doctor now. The best time to get your body into good shape for pregnancy is before you get pregnant, which means before you TTC since once you start you could become pregnant immediately. I did a pre-conception appointment and it was great, although I didn't have any giant pressing concerns. I'm glad I went and did blood work and whatnot.

@daniellemybelle: I've actually had two preconception appts with different OBs...the first time I specifically asked for it and the second time I just brought it up while I was there for an annual. The internal/physical part of the exam was exactly the same; they just talked to me about how regular my cycles were, whether or not there was a history of birth defects in my family, and so on. If you're worried your doctor won't spend enough time with you at the visit then maybe you can call and ask, but otherwise you could probably just bring it up!

Thanks all! It feels so premature, and I think running tests might be overkill... but I figure why not kill two birds with one stone?

@spaniellove: What does a preconception appointment entail? Should I call and ask for that specifically or just let her know once I arrive?

That sounds like a good opportunity to have a preconception discussion and definitely bring up your concerns about irregular cycles/cysts affecting your fertility. It doesn't make you a worry wart!

I think it's a great idea to bring it up to your doctor. You'll already be there, so maybe she can give you some tips. She also may be able to run some tests or something so that you know what you're getting yourself into. TTC is tough even if you don't have any health issues, so I think being pro-active is a great idea. Good luck!

I did. I have a history of infertility in my family and I don't have periods unless I'm on birth control. I was lucky and she referred me to an RE right away, we didn't have to wait for the one year mark. It never hurts to ask!

I have my annual lady doctor check up coming up in a few weeks, and it occurred to me that this could be my last annual visit before we TTC! Of course, it could be much longer, but there is an off chance we begin to try in the spring.

With my irregular and painful periods and history of ovarian cysts, I've always been a little worried about my ability to get pregnant. Right now, we are not actively preventing and it hasn't happened accidentally, but of course we aren't making it that easy. Obviously, you don't know until you try, is the saying right?

Still, part of me wants to discuss my concerns with my doctor and ask if she thinks we would run into any trouble, or if there's anything she'd suggest us look into beforehand. The other part of me thinks I am a huge worry wart and shouldn't bring it up until we are really ready to make a baby!

Whaddya think?
