DS still sleeps in a sack but around a year we started putting this sherpa blanket and animal pillow set they sell at Costco for like $10. Its a flat stuffed animal pillow and a velvet/sherpa toddler sized blanket. He never keeps the blanket on and doesn't really sleep on the pillow, but we lay him down on it and tuck the blanket over him at sleep time so he gets used to the idea. The blanket and pillow are warm so even if he's sleeping up against it, I feel like he gets a little more warmth from it.

I hate posting after an anecdote about a 9 mo and SIDS but.... J has a lovey, it's a blanket, it helps him sleep and everyone needs J to sleep as well as he can so I let him sleep with his lovey. He's 7.5 months.

I'm still pregnant, but won't be using a blanket until at least a year. My sisters best friend lost a baby to SIDS at 9 months while he was napping with a blanket. Obviously there was nothing to say that the blanket was the culprit, but, still. Too heartbreaking.

We only introduced blankets once DS was too big for the sleep sacks we owned, and was climbing out of his crib. It just didn't seem like a blanket was needed until he was moved into a big boy bed around 22 months.

At 1 year my ped said its fine to put whatever we want in the crib. He still uses a sleep sack (I like them and I think it helps with his bedtime routine) but I started also putting a light Aden & Anais blanket over him as well. Mostly to get him used to the idea of a blanket for when the time comes to get rid of sleep sacks.

We gave her tiny loveys maybe around six months but no blankets until more like 18 months. She was in a sleep sack before that and didn't mind it until she started trying to walk in the crib and tripping on it. Then it was summer and we didn't really give her anything so real blankets didn't start until 18 months just because of the temps. Even when it was just the thin A&A blankets I was so paranoid she would wrap it around her neck or something.

I think we didn't give Xander a loose blanket until closer to 18 months, but with Logan, I just gave him one at 12 months. He loves blankets so much, I thought he'd enjoy having one with him to sleep with, and he definitely does. It's an A&A swaddle blanket though - very breathable!

DD I was more paranoid, started I think close to 18months with a Dream Blanket. She always had sleepsack though.

DS I've been less paranoid, but he also is very noisy and doesn't move a lot in his sleep. He's been using a blanket since the first month. Started with A&A muslin, then Dream Blankets, and now a heavier knit blanket since its gotten colder.

We started with real blanket after a year but had a muslin cloth in there as soon as LO1 was out of the swaddle. He needed it for self soothing and still has it until this day (he's 2.5). LO2 doesn't really have anything in her crib because she would just play with it and not go to sleep.

DS around 9 months it was blanket and sleep sack, but he didn't move much in his sleep at that age.
DD after a year, but I don't remember when!

Both of their first blankets were AA Dream Blankets, which I find to be very breathable and don't knot up easily.

Both my kids have slept under a wool cot duvet or woollen blankets right from day dot. The duvet is tucked under the foot of the mattress so LO can't untuck it and I only use lightweight woollen or cotton blankets.

I put an A&A swaddle blanket over her for naps sometime after she turned one, but didn't start using loose blankets at night until this fall when she was 20-21 months old. I still prefer to put her in a sleepsack because she kicks blankets off and gets cold, but if she fights it, I cover (and then re-cover) her with a crocheted blanket and an A&A. The combo is pretty warm but both are breathable. I'm hoping to get her used to regular bedding in the near future, now that she's two.

Oh yeah. Much earlier than 1 (he's not even one yet!). We never used sleep sacks and I started with just a Muslin blanket cause it's so easy to breathe through but now that it's colder I've been putting another cozy blanket on top up to his waist or so. I would put the Muslin blanket all the way to his shoulders but he moves it when he moves his arms too much.

DD started using one at 13 months but she pretty much slept in the same place all night. DD2 is active while she sleeps so I don't think a blanket would keep her warm.

DS is 7.5 months and very mobile. He rolls both ways and is almost crawling. Tonight he was all out of sorts and worked up before bed (who knows why :silly: ) so he got hot and I took off his sleep sack. I finally got him to sleep and I put a crocheted blanket (loose weave) over him in the crib. I'm pretty comfortable with it, but I'll probably keep using the sleep sacks.

I've read that you're not supposed to do loose blankets until after a year old. Not looking for advice, I'm just curious, what age did you start using blankets in the crib? Any special reason?
