@LindsayInNYC: yes! The wikipedia is always what I point people to when explaining my food allergies. Any kind of cooked or processed version of the foods is ok but I miss fresh fruit so much!

@MrsWagon - Google "oral allergy syndrome" - there's a really good article on Wikipedia (my doctor actually referenced it!) but also articles on WebMd, About.com, etc. They're really informative! I don't know how well Benadryl would work because it only works for 4-6 hours but Claritin/Zyrtec are all day meds. Another thing that worked for me was cooking/heating the foods (making applesauce, etc). For some reason, doing that removed the allergen. Also, removing the skin sometimes helped too!

@betsyboop: interesting what your doc said...I'm Asian and I was a carb-oholic during my pregnancy. Carbs were the only thing that tasted good. I am pretty petite and I gained almost 50 pounds...thankfully I was able to lose it all due to breastfeeding. But I will have to keep that it mind for baby #2.

@mrs. wagon: I found I was gaining a lot when I was eating lean cuisines. I think it was the salt and subsequent water retention. After I stopped eating them, my weight gain slowed down again.

Cheese sticks, peanut butter and apples (can you have apples?) and grapes sound like great snacks!

@yoursilverlining: we've definitely cut back on eating out for financial reasons anyway, so going even further with that will definitely help, I think. I'm going to up the egg and cheese intake (I do love both).

@LindsayInNYC: this is really interesting to hear!! I do have outdoor allergies and my symptoms sound exactly like yours! Claritin is safe to take while pregnant, so maybe I will try it. However, I have taken allergy meds and still had reactions to foods that I've eaten by accident so I'm not too sure it will work. I'm willing to give it a shot though! I miss apples so much!!!

Are you allergic to fruit/vegetables specifically or do you have outdoor allergies? The reason I ask is that I have *terrible* outdoor allergies which cause me to react to fresh fruits and vegetables (not deadly - just annoying: itchy lips/throat, redness, etc.). If I take an antihistimine in the morning (I take Zyrtec but my doctor mentioned Benadryl, Claritin, etc. too), I'm safe to eat them that day! I don't know if they're safe to take while pregnant (since I'm not/haven't been yet, LOL) but might be something to keep in mind for afterwards?

I know you've said your family eats out a lot - that's the only time I gain weight is when I'm eating out, especially on-the-go foods because its impossible to police what's in them, and the fat/sodium levels are usually very high. So, could you maybe cut back there, instead of looking at "diet" snacks?

For snacks, I try to go filling, rather than "diet", because the longer you stay full, the less you eat overall. How are you with hard boiled eggs? Cheese slices? Even something like a bean salad might be good - lots of fiber and keeps you pretty full for a while. Peanut/almond/soy butter?

I don't really have any cravings or aversions yet. With #1 I started eating carbs right away!

@chopsuey119: I know, it's been so hard! In the first trimester, the thought of protein or veggies made me queasy so all I could eat were carbs! I was scolded by my doctor, and that's when she told me about the carbs/weight gain thing. 2nd trimester I was really good about carb counting, but after I passed my GD test, I went to town on the carbs again! I'm trying to be good during these last few weeks of pregnancy but it has been SO. HARD! Good luck with your 25lb goal...you can do it! Self control (of which I have none :) )

I've been craving the carbs too so I've been trying to drink more water and to have fruit/buts for snacks. It isn't easy but I am determined not to gain too much. I've also tried to keep exercising at least 3-4x's per week for 35-40 minutes when I'm not too tired.

Can you eat spinach? A spinach egg white omelet would probably be really filling and spinach is high in iron.

@mrs.wagon: Yeah, eat cheese or an egg! Good proteins! They slow down the digestion of carbs so that the carbs don't turn into sugar as fast. I have a bag of nuts in my purse and a bag of pepper jack cheese sticks in the fridge.

My OB stressed that especially with Asian women, carb consumption during pregnancy = rapid weight gain. I was devastated to hear this, but once I cut back on the carbs, my weight stabilized very quickly. Pineapple is actually not a great fruit to eat if you're watching carbs bc of the sugar :( Sad, I know.

I tried to snack on edamame, low-sodium string cheese, and popcorn.

@mrs.wagon: Nuts are fats but apparently they're good fats (as opposed to some of the other bad fats I guess). I'm required to eat 1 serving of protein with every serving of carbs on this GD diet. And nuts fulfills that protein requirement. Whenever I eat carbs, my dietician told me to eat a handful of nuts, 1 oz of cheese, or 1 egg. Nuts is just easier to much on as a snack so I eat nuts often. My husband eats like I do now (poor guy. lol) so we eat a lot of nuts cause he hates cheese.

I'd ask my OB about the SlimFast, but I don't think there would be an issue since they're basically liquified vitamins. The main drawback I see is they might not have the same "staying power" as actual breakfast food, so you might end up taking in more calories in the morning instead of less.
I've been eating Special K cereal for breakfast with a glass of OJ and that usually keeps me satisfied for 2-3 hours. Then it's snack time!

I don't think I would feel comfortable eating foods that are aimed at weight loss while pregnant. There can be chemicals in there that are probably not great for baby. So I would ditch the slim fast. What about replacing it with ensure? That will give you a good balance of necessary vitamins and minerals without a lot of calories.

My gestational diabetes diet has helped me maintain my weight. Not that I would advocate this diet for everyone but the basic concept of low carbs/high protein and healthy snacks 3 times a day is a great way to maintain weight. And man...as much as I'd LOOOOVE to eat some chocolate cake, I can't :( I tell people that my GD is a blessing in disguise because I'm sure that I would've gained so much more weight if I didn't have GD.

Oh, how about nuts? Can you eat nuts? Healthy + filling. :)

So at my monthly appointment this morning I was horrified to see that I've gained a total of almost 30 pounds already... and I'm only 27 weeks along! I gained a total of around 40 with Wagon Jr. so that gives me only 10 pounds left and I'm not even into the third trimester yet. YIKES.

So it's time to really start being careful. Usually when I need to lose or maintain weight I do a big kitchen purge and fill my cabinets and fridge with low fat and healthy snacks. It's tough this time though because I want to constantly snack, and I'm allergic to most fresh fruits and veggies so I can't do apples, carrot sticks, or celery.

I just stocked up on yogurt, healthy choice fudge bars, fiber one bars, popchips, pineapple, grapes, popcorn, skinny cow candy, lean cuisines for lunches and weight loss shakes (like slim fast) for breakfasts.

I'm not too confident about the slim fasts though-- does anyone think it's not good to drink those for breakfast while pregnant?

And what do you stock up on when you're trying to watch your calorie / fat intake??
