@BabyBoecksMom: do you find that your daughter can eat salad easily? Mine are currently getting their two-year molars, so they are in a more mushy-food phase as a lot of things seem to bother them when chewing. Hoping this will go away once they've got the last of their teeth!

@swurlygurl: this reminds me a little of the "deconstructed" burrito bowls I keep reading about but not trying...lots of separate items that can be thrown together and each person eats what they want. The twins are somewhat picky; well, actually one of them is, won't eat meat and hardly any veggies. Goes to show that no matter what you do you may have a picky eater! I mean they've both been given the same foods since birth. But thanks, I really do like the idea of giving them separate elements of my salad w/o the leaves.

@LuLu Mom: I like your approach...double veggies for me! I can't do without carbs, either. I've been just getting a loaf of bread to have with dinner so hubby & twins can eat more of it. Had not thought of doubling veggies, though!

Clean, whole foods, with protein :) meals can be a veggie and a meat. You probably don't need a carb unless you're active. At lunch, yes, dinner, not necessarily

Yes, what @mamimami said -- Skinnytaste is the best! I've been cooking recipes from her blog for awhile and recently bought her cookbook. The recipes are all healthy but they taste great. My DH also loves them!

@Smurfette: that's right when my LO started hating like 80% of the fruits & veggies she used to adore! She used to get down with some lettuce, now she just acts like I'm crazy for giving her a leaf lol i have to be really creative & think of "abnormal" veggies to get her to eat them. Most fruits are refused lately too.

@swurlygurl: You are so lucky. R used to eat some veggies, then around 13 months, she just flat out refused. She is fine with just not eating too if she doesn't like what we give her.

I agree with everyone else that talked about clean/real foods.

I’m in a similar boat, trying to lose weight while my husband isn’t. I’m being really mindful of my carb intake, as I’ve found that to be the biggest issue for me in losing the weight. We feed LO usually a separate meal (we still eat after she goes to bed), but my LO does like salad, so maybe your kids would surprise you!

We eat a lot of salads with lean proteins (lots of fish), and then my husband might also have some rice, or risotto, or a baked potato/pasta or whatever other carb. I just don’t have that part of the meal (or a very, very small serving). That way we’re eating the same meal, but altering it to fit both of our wants/needs.

What does a normal week of dinners look like in your house? Maybe if you tell us what you guys like, we could come up with more specific help :)

@Smurfette: Hah, she's a weirdo! I'm kind of a nutball about her nutrition because both sides of my family have serious weight problems. It's really just all I've given her. ILs try to force her to eat cake and she just spits it out :silly:

I understand where you're at. My husband is 6'8" and eats everything w/o gaining a pound. But, I think it's all a balance of just eating the right foods at each meal. My oldest (almost 3) eats everything we eat. In order for me to lose the weight, I just watch my portions, track my calories on MyFitnessPal.com and exercise where I can.

Dinners usually consist of one protein, one or two veggies and a carb. Like, salmon with steamed asparagus and rice (took 15 min to cook the whole dinner), or tamales and black beans. If we decide to do salad, then our daughter eats it, too because it teaches healthy eating habits at a young age.

Just eat real food! My whole family eats clean! I will usually keep shredded chicken or turkey breast on hand, we eat a lot of eggs. There are clean recipes galore on the Internet & once you do it for a while it gets easier to adapt some "regular" recipes to your lifestyle. Half the time my family doesn't even realize they are eating healthy!
IMO, quality is more important that quantity. Not to say that you should gorge yourself on foods just because they're clean but for me, clean eating is easier to keep up with because there is no guilt if I happen to be extra hungry & need seconds or whatever. I also never feel sluggish or blah after eating anymore either which is great.

I think you can for sure alter what you eat and still serve your family. I also focus on breakfast/lunch for "me" so very healthy egg whites for breakfast and a salad for lunch. For dinner I usually do a smaller portion of whatever I make for DH and DD, however I will do a double portion of the veggie side and a 1/2 portion of the meat/starch (I can't cut carbs it just doesn't work for me) but I switch to whole wheat instead of enriched or do more brown rice instead of pasta, ect.

I also dont' think healthy eating automatically means "salad every meal" as I need substance to fill me up. grilled chicken and veggie is filling and healthy. Also, fish is a great lean protein that you can serve your family. It's all about portion control. Up the veggies and fruits and cut out carbs and sweets and you should notice a huge difference. Also, exercise is important.

I do Weight Watchers (have had great success in the past) and pick meals from skinnytaste that I know the family will like, or just in general like @Bluebonnet: says, dumping cheese on top of everyone else's or giving everyone else rice or potatoes or whatever.

You could focus on eating lean meats and veggies and add pasta/rice/bread for DH and the kids. That way you are eating clean, but everyone is eating mostly the same thing.

Are your kids picky eaters? I've been doing something similar to what you're talking about.
Thankfully DH and L are both good eaters :)
We make HUGE salads for dinner. Mine is just veggies and beans. I keep cooked meat in the fridge for DH & L (chicken, ground turkey, carne asada, etc). L pretty much gets a salad, just without the lettuce: (frozen) peas, (frozen) corn, (frozen) green beans, shredded carrots, beans, olives, croutons, cherry tomatoes, cheese, pickled beets, meat.

I'm a huge believer in the whole foods/clean eating approach using as little processed food as possible and as many plant sources as possible, This doesn't mean vegetarian, or deprivation, just being careful with what you eat and the quality of what you eat. Homemade food with quality ingredients is so much better than a frozen or processed meal. I have been eating this way for years and am a healthy weight and satisfied with my body image.

I feel like I need to change what I eat to lose the last of the baby weight...yeah, two year old twins and still dragging 10 pounds of "twin skin," sigh. Anyone have suggestions on a plan/diet of some sort that will work for the WHOLE family? What I mean is, I know for me, big salads for lunch are awesome...but the twins can't eat salad. I want to eat lighter and lose weight without having to cook separate meals for myself. Oh, and hubby is 6'4" and needs to eat like a teenage football player in order to avoid accidentally losing weight...grr.
