I've been taking a pre-natal for a few months. I'd cut the alcohol to no more than 2 units per day (and not drinking every day), and caffeine down to, say, two cups of coffee per day. Otherwise, eat healthy. :) Getting proper nutrition increases your chances.

I didn't do anything different other than starting pre-natal vitamins. I was never a regular or heavy drinker, so I didn't cut down on that, but I was careful to only have a drink the day of the return of my period, just in case.

I've started taking prenatal vitamins and I am trying to cut back on caffeine (oh...diet coke is my vice!!). I don't drink or smoke, so that isn't a biggie. I've lost about 15 lbs so far pre-TTC by eating more veggies and less candy, and by starting an exercise program. I was shocked to hear that you can't have soft serve ice cream or fro-yo when pregnant, though! Eeks!! I'll have to find a new favorite dessert for those 9 months...

I just started taking a prenatal, and reduced (but didn't eliminate) caffeine and alcohol. I took 13 months to conceive, and I would have gone crazy if I had eliminated tons of foods and stuff I likes (sushi, rare steak, runny eggs etc). Even when you do get pregnant, I find it is valuable to do a lot of your own research and evaluate every recommendation to see if it is something you think it worth following or not.

And just to add my 2 cents. Don't stress too much about all the no-nos and "rules"- especially when you're TTC. Sure, take care of yourself and be healthy, but even once you're pregnant a bunch of the rules are relatively new or (in some people's opinions) overly conservative. Think what women used to do whilst pregnant and many, many babies made it just fine.
Obviously, I'm not advocating reckless behaviour, but a little brie probably won't hurt :)

@Ginger, mine used to be like clockwork while on BC too. Then in April, it completely disappeared (while still on BC)! My doctor said this was OK, and I'd regulate once I got off BC. This is my first month off it, and it's a little wonky (got mine 2 wks earlier than what _would have been_ the placebo pill week), so we'll see!

Thanks, everyone, for the elementary level help here. :)

I haven't even gone off the pill yet, so I'm not sure about the regularity of my cycle - though, pre-pill it was like clockwork. I wonder if it will be different now?

Thanks again, all!

The pregnancy guidelines like alcohol and caffeine are for issues that would affect a developing fetus. If there is no fetus, obviously you don’t need to avoid those things. Additionally, you can safety consume quite a bit of caffeine while pregnant, so outside of the concern for caffeine withdrawal and your own personal comfort, it’s not something I worried about while TTC.

It takes approximately 4 weeks for the fetus to implant and form any sort of blood-blood connection, so drinking during the TWW is not dangerous to the fetus – according to my OB, unless you are drinking to levels that would simply create a toxic environment inside your body in general (which isn’t normal drinking behavior), and even then, it’s just toxic in general for you, not specifically for the fetus. She suggests women stop drinking completely once you got a positive pregnancy test, which is what I did, but said there is no medical reason to stop before then.

If your lifestyle is fairly healthy to begin with, this is not something to stress out over and beat yourself up about.

We are ***just starting TTC.... it's O day!
But I plan (have been) doing everything in moderation type living for a while. Eating a bit healthier, drinking a bit (ok a lot) less, exercising normally. BUT taking my vitamins religiously!
Can't stress prenatals enough!

Good luck!!

@ Ginger - when you ovulate varies for every woman. Some women ovulate on day 12, others on day 14, others on day 17, etc etc. In fact, many women don't even ovulate on the same day every month (I never did)! The one thing that typically remains constant is the number of days between your ovulation date and your period (also known as your luteal phase).

There are ways that you can track your ovulation (by checking your cervical mucus - ie, discharge, taking temps, checking your cervical position, or by using ovulation predictor kits), or monitoring any ovulation pains or cramps. I personally used ovulation predictor kits (called OPKs) to figure out when I was ovulating...but we were also REALLY TTC, not NTNT.

Good luck!

You ovulate 14 days before your period. Most women, even when they aren't actively charting, have a general idea when their next period is due. So if you wanted to be extra careful, you wouldn't drink in the last two weeks of your cycle. Now, that being said... Something like 50% of pregnancies are unplanned so a whole lot of women are drinking alcohol in that time period before their missed period since they don't know that they are pregnant. So it won't be the end of the world and likely will have no effect on the baby. It's just something some women choose to do to be extra responsible when they know they are trying to get pregnant.

Um. Remember how I said I was brand new? This next question should prove it: How do you know when "after ovulation" is, if you're not charting/tracking/etc.?

I'm happy to wear the dunce cap now.

I lost a fair amount of weight to prep for TTC. And started taking prenatals 6 months ahead of time. Once we start actively trying (in a month) the only real adjustment I'll make is to not drink alcohol between ovulation and my period.

I lived life as normally as possible while we were TTC. Consumed caffeine, ate lots of "no no's" for when pregnant, and drank plenty of wine. We were TTC for 8 months, so.....

The only thing I really did differently was took prenatal vitamins religiously and tried not to get drunk after ovulation, but before my period. I violated this rule a few times though.

Hiya! Brand new here...followed the path from weddingbee.

We're thinking about NTNT in 2012, and I'm trying to mentally and physically prepare myself for it.

I know there are a lot of dietary/behavior restrictions during pregnancy, like alcohol, caffeine, etc., but I'm wondering how many of you adhered to them pre-preganancy?

Our plan (for now) is to let nature run its course in 2012. If nature is lazy, or has other plans, we'll start evaluating other options in 2013. On the one hand, I want to make my body a healthy and safe place for when/if we conceive (whenever that may be) - but, if 2012 doesn't work out, that means an entire year of no wine? Or coffee?!

Obviously I'm brand new at this. Thoughts, anyone?
