I've been EBF and was really cautious of this too, I started modified paleo at 10/11ish PP and lost most of my PP weight through that (even losing the baby+Placenta weight didn't do much for me!)

It hasn't affected my milk supply and I'm drinking a ton more water and eating WAY healthier :)

I've never counted calories before but am comfortable exercising and being less sugar happy and have been since two months pp. I've lost 25 of 30 lbs mainly from breastfeeding- I eat when in hungry only drink water amtry to eat whole foods. Just listen to your body! I've just started not having to eat in the middle of the night :)

I'm 6 months postpartum and still haven't started dieting. I agree with other posters, with breastfeeding, you're eating for two still. I eat so much more now than when I was pregnant.

@Sammyfab: Oh, definitely! That is something I'll have to keep in consideration. That's a good idea though, just changing the way I eat.

I started WW at 4 weeks PP. I felt good enough to take walks as exercise, and at that point I just wanted to start losing the weight. I wasn't BF'ing, but they do have a program that accounts for it.

ps -if you've never done WW, it's basically a balanced diet (no foods are restricted)....sounds like what you described doing pre-pregnancy!

I did WW starting at 3 months post partum, I felt comfortable doing that because it accounted for BF and didn't restrict calories too much. I wouldn't do any low cal diet while BF. In terms of food choices though, no reason not to start right away.

I wouldn't recommend dieting if you're breastfeeding. You'll need the calories...you're still essentially eating for two! :-p

I would say that you could alter the way you eat (e.g. Eating clean, going paleo, etc.) right away. Changing what you eat will have a better (and longer lasting) impact than calorie deprivation.

I was even more hungry BFing than I was when I was pregnant, so I basically just stuffed my face for the first few weeks! After about a month I started eating healthy and walking, but didnt count calories because I found that my food needs were so different every day.

I don't have any advice, but I would LOVE hearing input on this topic! I'm having my baby soon and am already thinking about all the weight I've put on this pregnancy and how much I need to get back in shape! I'd love to hear what other people did and when they started doing it!

In the 9 months leading up to my BFP, I lost almost 30 pounds with a combination of daily walks and calorie control. I've given a lot of that up during pregnancy due to the insane hunger I've had + exhaustion, although I've recently started to walk more.

My question is this, when is it safe to go back on a 'diet' after pregnancy? All I was doing before was keeping my calorie counts below 1600-1800 a day, no specific food plan or anything. Did any of you start something like that up after pregnancy? When did you feel comfortable doing so?
