5 is for sure taller! Longer in length. My son is now 6 and we just tried on some VERY tight 5 pants today. Guess he needs to go shoppign!

My DS is also in that transition place with sizing. He is on the shorter size so I did some 5T pants since they are a little shorter but also picked up some 5's to grow into. For tops we moved right into 5/small in boys so that he could wear them longer.

Thanks everyone! I had a pair of 6 slim skinny jeans from Children's place in the mail from a few days ago, so I'll see how those fit before I order anything else. (and report back since it varies so much!).

I’d go with the 5! My almost 6 year old is about that size and 6 swallows him up (in every direction, he’s fairly tall and slim) but 5T is too short.

In our experience the non-T boy sizes fit a bit looser and longer than the T sizes. It feels as if they're cut to be similar to the "big boys" rather than the cute little boy clothes. So shorts are longer and t-shirts are looser. I don't feel like I've noticed a difference in pants.

Toddler sizes are usually made to accommodate a diaper/pull up so they are bigger in the bum area.

Once you move up from toddler sizes the pants usually slim down and aren't as big in the waist/bum. T-shirts are slightly longer in the regular sizes.

If I’m not mistaken, a size 5 fits larger than a 5T. My mom asked a sales associate about the difference between the “T” sizes and just the numbered sizes last year, and I believe she was told that the T sizes fit smaller.

Ugh sizing! I don’t know if this is real but 5t things seem too small for my son but 5 is usually ok. He also wears some size 6. Depends on the brand really!

I'm doing some online shopping for DS and he needs to possibly move up to a 6 slim in pants... but now I'm questioning if I should order a 5 slim in boys instead?

Specifically looking at Old Navy and Children Place. He usually wears the karate jeans in 5T but they're getting short on him.

Anyone know the difference between the 5T and 5?
