This happened to me... I had one finger that was always lower! When I tested and thought I got a too high reading... i would retest on my good finger and get a lower reading all the time. Though my poor good finger got pricked a lot! :(

I'm going to second the washing your hands thoroughly before you test. I would have a pretty significant difference between readings if I washed or didn't wash my hands. Even putting on lotion the night before and then not washing my hands before testing made the reading really high.

This happens, and it's so frustrating! I realized really washing my hands is important. And when I would have an unexpected result, I would test again and often get a more expected number the second time. Lots of factors. I think it's important not to get too hung up on just one number, but look at the patterns. I had my dr. tell me how numbers he would allow to be out of the acceptable range each week b/c I needed to have a concrete goal to work with like that.

@MrsLilybugg: My husband is diabetic and this happens to him sometimes. I think it has to do with the strip or if there was something sweet on your fingers prior to you sticking yourself. He just takes the average when it happens.

background: I'm "at risk" for insulin resistance. I failed the one-hour test but wasn't able to complete the 3-hour one, so my OB had me test my sugars for two weeks. After those numbers came back OK, she is having me test my fasting count and one hour after meals twice a week to stay on top of it.

Anyway.

Sometimes I notice that my machine can give me different readings. Once it happend three times, so I just wrote down an "average".

This morning my first reading for fasting was 96 which was super high for me. I tried a different finger (w/ different strip) and it said 88. Which is more normal for me. the mid-upper 80s range.

Anyway, does this happen to anyone else? I use the Freestyle Lite
