@mrs. wagon: thank you, and I agree! We were actually marveling that this was our first ped visit that wasn't a regular well visit. Our doctor was totally nice about it too, and this gave us a chance to ask a bunch of other questions while we were there.

@Adira: thank you! She actually sent us home with some Aquaphor samples, so I'll get to try it out.

@MoonMoon: yay! Honestly, as a first time parent, my motto was ALWAYS "better safe than sorry". Every time I felt foolish for bringing my kids to the ped for something that turned out to be minor, I have never looked back and regretted doing so!! At the very least, it's taught me all about all the little things and now I don't worry about them so much :)

Update:

We finally got baby to the doctor today and the diagnosis is... A patch of dry skin! She said it could be eczema, but since it's only in one place and not red, she didn't recommend hydrocortisone, and just to moisturize. She said if he were on solid food, it might have been explored as an allergy, but for now it's most likely a reaction to the cold, dry winter air and heaters, etc.

I'm glad we went in, even though it's turned out to be most likely a first time parent overreaction!

@yourekindapretty: I'm sorry the hydrocortisone didn't work for you! I hope you find a solution. I'll update this thread with what my Dr says.

my 4.5 month old has the (sounds like) same thing on her cheek. Ditto everyone else's suggestions. our dr. told us to put 1% hydrocortisone on it 2x a day. unfortunately we havent seen any results from it and hydrocortisone can cause other kinds of damage so we are now putting vaseline on it 2x a day... havent seen much results (its been over a week) though. im going to go back to the dr in another few days if it doesnt get better.

My DS was newborn, our ped said all rashes meant you come in for an acute care appt. HB is not full of doctors so if you are worried about it, I';d still take your baby in to the ped.

our LO recently had a red, raised patch with fairly distinctive edges on his butt that sounded similar to yours. we were concerned it was ringworm and brought him to the ped's office but it turns out it was eczema. we started applying aveeno baby eczema and it started to fade in a few days and after a week was almost nearly gone. at first i thought it wasn't responding, but we kept applying and eventually it did go away.

@mamimami: thank you! :wink:

@Mrs. Jacks: it's actually really tough to photograph-it's the same color as the rest of his skin, not red or raised or anything! Does it have to itch or burn to be numular eczema? This doesn't seem to cause him any discomfort, even when we touch it.

Ask your pedi! Repeated (not occasional) use of cortisone can have other health effects.

@MoonMoon: Yes, the 1% hydrocortisone is over the counter! The ointment will work better than the cream, just an FYI. :) It's usually in the pharmacy department.

I would try some cortizone! I've seen that patch too and that usually clears it up. LMW's eczema is a bit more severe so we got a prescription hydrocortizone (5%) and that usually clears things up pretty quickly.

It could be viral, my son had something similar on his trunk and the ped said there was nothing that could be done about it.

I agree about trying cortisone though, if your ped is okay with it.

I agree that it sounds like eczema, though it's odd that it's only in that one spot, so I'm not really positive! You could definitely try using hydrocortisone ointment on it and see if it clears up!

My son has something similar and when I talked to the dr about it, he told me to put 1% hydrocortisone on it twice a day. LO's is a type of eczema and it has responded to that cream, but not to anything else. I would talk to your dr about it.

Our baby is 20 weeks old and for the last couple of weeks we've noticed a rough patch of skin, about the size of a quarter, on the right side of his abdomen above his belly button. It has some raised bumps, as if he had permanent goosebumps there. There is no discoloration but the skin has gotten a bit rougher with time.

I tried describing this to the nurse at his doctor's office, but she seemed to understand it as a patch of dry skin and told us to put Vaseline or aquaphor on it. It's not dry skin, it's very distinct, and it doesn't respond to lotion.

Does it sound familiar to anyone? Google isn't helping. I think I'm going to have the Dr check it out because I'm worried it's a fungal infection or a reaction to his 2 month shots. Help!
