@looch: Oh that is very interesting! Great idea! I will look up books that are in a different language. :)

If that is all you read I'd say lazy. But as part of your rotation, why not.

A good way to get some books you don't have.

I think they're a great alternative, especially if you're trying to use them for a second language that you don't speak.

How old is your LO? I think the age might matter. When they are young, it's important for them to see you speaking the words and reading so that they learn how to form words themselves. With an older LO, it might not matter as much, but I still think actually reading to them yourself is important.

@Mrs. Sunshine: I have the same concern- my LO loves screen time of all kinds and I just don't want another thing I have to fight to limit. I don't see anything wrong with it but I think reading ourselves is better. But we don't read a ton of books in a row usually.

I don't think you're being lazy. I personally don't do digital books for myself so I probably wouldn't add them into the regular rotation for my LO. Also, she would come to prefer the digital book to my reading to her and that would cause some fit throwing. But that's just my LO, I know other kids would handle it fine. We also only read 2 or 3 nooks a night. I might sing a different tune if we were reading a ton more (which I know many bees do).

haha! I don't think you are being lazy! You said it's part of your rotation, so to me that means you are also reading real books aloud. I think it sounds cool and I'm going to see if I can find it on my kindle app on my iPad. I'm not really a stickler about screen time though. I find if I don't make a huge deal about it, then it's not as desired. Everything in moderation :)

I don't think you're being lazy, as long as these supplement you reading real books with LO. That way you can interact more with LO and point out colors or numbers or things in the book that the app doesn't pause to read. I think more interactivity is a better pre-reading skill than watching a digital version of the book being read. There are some wonderful book apps for kids :)

@MaryM: Fair enough! Yeah parents reading to kids is best. :) I will mention that I am sitting with LO as "we" watch the book being read to us. Haha. I sort of feel like it's the same experience without me straining my voice (not that straining my voice is a big deal) and it just feels more relaxing. That's why I wanted to share my experience with my co-worker.

I guess I would see this as the equivalent of me having books on record when I was little. There were physical books, but I had records that would "read" them.

I don't think it's the same as having the parent interaction (I was the third kid, so I think I lost out on some of that in general), but overall, I think it's better than no exposure to books if that's the alternative. I don't think it should take the place of ALL reading if possible.

@honeybear: I guess I could choose to read the books myself. So it's like a free book (I'm amazon prime person and these are free apps through their underground program). I think it's a human recorded voice. It starts from the top of the page so you can't really have it start middle of the page but there is only 1-3 sentences per page. Every time LO flips the page it will start reading that page but he can totally flip back or even more forward and it will just start reading from the beginning of whatever page he is on.

It is pretty cool!

@Raindrop: Probably! The ones I saw had the text / pictures and you could flip the 'pages' as you wanted and ask it to reread by tapping the word, but it was an iPad app. I don't have a Kindle and the iPad is gathering dust somewhere. :) Is it a human reading it on the Kindle? I think it was an actual recording on the iPad.

@honeybear: Oh interesting so these book apps are seriously the book in a digital form and it reads the words while it's highlights it in the book. We have some of the physical books we saw last night and it's the same book. You can also flip between pages and it will read the last page if you flip back to that page.

Maybe we are thinking of two different things? :)

I go low-tech when it comes to books, although I do like audio books for specific circumstances. I tested out a few apps that read books/tell stories, and they were too much like a TV show for my liking. I wouldn't count a book app as read aloud time, but I guess a well-done one could be an okay supplement. The main thing I don't like about apps is that there's no back-and-forth if a child has a question or wants to explore some idea/topic in more detail. You can't have a conversation with an app.

I just got the amazon fire and I noticed a ton of book apps like for the berenstain bears.

It’s is great! It reads the book for you! What? That’s amazing, why didn’t I know about this sooner?

LO loved it. We watched like 3 of them last night. I think I might put this into normal rotation because my throat does get a little scratchy when I read all the books at night.

I was telling a co-worker about them and she thought that I was being lazy! I actually don’t mind she said that because I try to do as many parenting shortcuts I can get away with. I’m totally the lazy parent in my co-worker group and I sort of take pride in that. Haha.

Anyways I just wanted to ask if you thought if anyone else does this and/or thinks it is lazy?

Also if there is a negative about this let me know! I really don’t see a downside to this at all unless you could say this as screen time?
